A bill of attainder, also known as an act of attainder, writ of attainder, or bill of penalties, is a legislative act that declares a person or group of people guilty of a crime and punishes them, often without a trial. Such a bill nullifies the targeted person’s civil rights, including the right to own property, the right to a title of nobility, and, in at least the original usage, the right to life itself.
