Our first child came in 1984, when Mrs. U was 31. I was shocked when her OB-GYN recommended termination, saying that there was a 1 in 180 chance of Down! We both told him that we believed God gave special children to special parents, and we liked those odds. Later, during an appointment I was unable to attend, he asked my wife if I was pressuring her not to abort…

We had two more children, in two other cities, and every doctor — every one we saw — recommended or strongly suggested termination! We refused amniocentesis each time.

I’ve not been around many Down folks, but those I’ve met were happy, outgoing, extremely polite, and a joy to spend time with!

I’m so glad you and your wife persevered. Doctors know a lot, but they don’t know as much as they think they do.

You wouldn’t have a family if you had listened to them!
What a great story, God Bless!
