Well, at least it’s an attempt at a solution.
In 1958, when the jeweler Harry Winston donated the Hope Diamond to the Smithsonian, he sent it through the US mail. He’s supposed to have said, “Well, if you can’t trust the U.S. Mail, what can you trust?”
But the problem of mail being stolen now doesn’t seem to be the fault of the postal service, any more than jewelry stores being looted is the fault of the store owners.
I think it’s a good idea to lock the boxes after the mail is collected every day. A lot of the theft attempts are probably taking place in the middle of the night, and if people can’t deposit mail after hours, their mail won’t be stolen.
