I'm old enough to remember the Buddhist monks setting themselves on fire (as a protest against Ngo Dinh Diem's governemnt) and heard at the time that that was not a Buddhist tradition. Was that the first time Buddhists had done something like that?

After the 1968 Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia, a young Czech (Jan Palach?) set himself on fire.
