We can argue the details, but the basic idea is not absurd.
A lot of people wind up in jail because . . . THE NUMBER ONE REASON IS THEY CAN’T AFFORD GOOD COUNSEL AND DEPEND ON PUBLIC DEFENDERS. The PDs have a backlog and just want to plea bargain everyone to lower sentence to work thru their backlog.

Point being, no question they screwed up, but if you turn them loose after their sentence is served — with NOTHING — then how do they live? And no, they all don’t have relatives who want an ex con living with them.

Inmates will end owing US!
They might consider using prison labor and PAYING them when they are released. State gets income from products sold; inmate gets skill and $$$ on release. Win - win.
Yeah I doubt they’re getting 1099ed
Trying to abolish work programs while in. What are the odds they will have a work requirement when they are out? Slim to none. Heck there are no work mandates here in NYS as a whole to get welfare.

I am totally unable to connect”DIGNITY & STABILITY” with released prisoners.
ESPECIALLY in NY where they seem to have a very hard time actually putting troublemakers in to prison .
WE have enough criminals of our own, thank you.
YOU still need to park it somewhere.
A VERY nice such location about 35 miles from me now charges $850 a month to park. THEIR property taxes are buried in those rates. BEFORE BIDEN-—used to be about 1/2 of that.

NYS is insanity run amok. “no bail” allows 4 perps who carved up bodies and distributed parts aropund LI to walk free, 10K credit cards to illegals, throw out students of a HS to allow illegals to reside, unsafe to walk the streets, etc. and the beet goes on.
That recidivism rate is about to decrease exponentially.
NYS just closed half a dozen prisons.
And is now talking about closing around 5 more.
Rumor has it some of those facilities will be repurposed for housing illegals.
