France and Moldova to sign defence pact amid fears of Russian destabilisation

Moldova and France will sign a defence cooperation accord on Thursday as part of the West's efforts to strengthen the former Soviet state's capabilities amid what they fear are increasing efforts by Russia to destabilise Moldova.

Moldova, a western neighbour of Ukraine, has a tiny defence budget and has long had tense relations with Moscow, which have worsened as Chisinau backs Ukraine in the war against Russia.

Russia has troops and peacekeepers based in Transdniestria, a breakaway statelet of Moldova that has maintained its autonomy for three decades with the Kremlin's support.

The French presidency said in a statement on Wednesday that defence and economic cooperation accords would be signed when President Emmanuel Macron meets his Moldovan counterpart Maia Sandu in Paris.

Moldova is a breakaway statelet of Romania and it's internal affairs is none of NATOs business.

The French are pretty savvy in politics. They take a more holistic view of situations. IMO they are positioning in Moldova as a contingency for collapse of the Russian Federation ala Khaddaffi’s Libya.

You mention Libia as if Hillary’s disastrous regime change effort was successful. It was, and remains, an American foreign policy disaster. Does the word Benghazi ring a bell?

Moldova was part of the Soviet Union from 1944 to 1991. It was partly Romanian and partly Soviet from 1920 to 1942 when Romania, the ally of Germany and Italy, took control of its entirety. Before 1930, it had been part of the Tsarist Empire and the Ottoman Empire before 1860. Over 80% of the population are ethnically Romanian, with a Slavic minority mostly living in the Transnistria region.

There would be nothing wrong with Romania reuniting with their Moldovan kinsmen, conceding Transnistria to Ukraine. NATO and Russia should stay out.

Heh...Moldova will ultimately join NATO as well as the European Union.

This was but the first step, old boy.

I believe there are more ethnic Russians than Ukrainians living in Transnistria.

Transnistria isn’t Moldova’s only problem child.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said this week he would support Moldova’s autonomous region of Gagauzia after meeting the territory’s pro-Moscow leader, sparking further fears of destabilization in the Eastern European country as it races to join the EU.

Evghenia Guțul, who has been in Russia since last week, said Putin “promised to extend support to Gagauzia and the Gagauz people in upholding our legal rights, our authority and positions in the international arena.”

Just what NATO and the EU needs; another land-locked, Eastern European construct with 2 million mostly unemployed people. If you rejoice in collecting economic Basket Cases, take it, it's all yours.

FWIW, I think we need to see what’s in that so-called defense accord.

I wouldn’t take the enemedia’s word for what’s in it.

For all the KGB hubbabaloo about “US interference in [their client puppet’s downfall]” Hillary had nothing to do with Khaddaffi’s downfall. Her greatest accomplishment was getting the ambassador killed thru fear and intransigence.

You should have removed yourself from this conversation before you made a complete fool of yourself. Too late now.

It was a revolt and civil war. It was not some ‘foreign espionage-cloak-and-dagger overthrow’.

Just like Ukraine you’re using BS hyperbole and aspersion in defiance to obvious reality.

Keep looking for those (KGB-promised) flowers ppl were throwing upon invading Russian troops in Feb ‘22.

Libya was a Neocon regime change project, led by Hillary. Your desire to remain ignorant is why America has a disastrous foreign policy.

“Libya was a Neocon regime change project....”

What a joke. Of the millions of Libyans who partook in the Libyan civil war (and Syrian) I doubt if even a handful ever heard of the word “neocon” Hillary Clinton or Victoria Newland.

You’re just make really lame and weak excuses for failed, despotic KGB-sponsored regimes.

You should be booted from this site as a foreign agent
