Third party candidates have determine outcomes in presidential races several times. Gearge Wallace in 1968 took southern Democrat votes away from the Democrat candidate Hubert Humphrey, giving Richard Nixon the win. In 1992 and 1996 Ross Perot took GOP votes giving Bill Clinton the win.

In the 2000 election Democrats frequently claim Al Gore’s loss to George W. Bush was due to the Supreme Court intervening in the Florida recount to give Bush the victory.by only 537 votes. In reality leftist activist and Green Party Candidate Ralph Nader obtained 97,488 votes in Florida in the 2000 election. Had Nader not been on the ballot most of his votes would have arguably gone to Al Gore giving Gore the win in Florida and nationally.

Looking at 2024 Georgia is a must win state for whoever the Democrat candidate turns out to be. A Georgia win make Pennsylvania and Michigan essential for the Republican candidate. In PA and MI the Dem ground game, loose voting rules, and control of the state voting administration makes a victory almost impossible for a Republican. If the DEMs can use a 3rd party spoiler to enough steal moderate GOP votes to win Georgia, taking one more southern state from Trump will wrap up 2024.

North Carolina will be the other battleground state in the south. Trump won extremely narrow victories in NC 2016 and 2020. He won NC by 3.7% in 2016 and 1.3% in 2020. NC will have 16 Electoral votes in 2024 making it essential for a Trump victory. The state’s demographics are shifting blue due to an influx of people to the state’s urban areas. The Democrats are investing heavily in the get out the vote effort across the state.
