THE DAILY CHART: HAITI—LESS VIOLENT THAN CHICAGO?
Power Line ^ | MARCH 13, 2024 | STEVEN HAYWARD

Haiti is back in the news...

I thought the Clinton Foundation had fixed the place! Or Colin Powell in the 1990s. Or something. How soon until Biden sends in American troops? Or lets 500,000 Haitians come to America?

Anyway, Haiti is in the state of nature right now, with gangs and mobs rampaging. And yet, as a smart left-leaning friend of mine (I do have a few of those—opposition research) points out, the murder rate in Haiti is lower than many American cities:

When a person is eaten, and no report is given to the authorities, was there ever a murder?

Maybe Port-au-Prince is just like Baltimore. But the crime is not that bad outside the city?

In the chart given Chicago isn’t listed. These are for 2023 stats so it might now be higher in Haiti since things have gone south so to speak. 41 murders per 100k for Haiti edges out Detroit at 39. East St. Louis is Number 1 in the US with 111 per 100k. St. Louis itself is the highest large city at 66 per 100k.

As far as I can tell, he is comparing apples to oranges.

The murder rate in East St Louis, IL is 111/100k, 0.1%; however, the rate for all of Illinois is so low no one even mentions it.

The murder rate in Haiti may be 41/100k, but what about the rate in Port au Prince, where 85% of the 2023 murders occurred?

The population of this city is about 1,000,000; the number of murders around 4000. The rate looks to me to be *four times* that of East St Louis.

Moreover, while murder is to me a good indicator of serious crime rates *in the US*, where most bodies are found, and once found accurately determined to be murder, this may not be true in more corrupt or less advanced places.

I would wager that there are more murders than those reported in Haiti, and now the problem will be worse.
