Not much different in California. I’ve read on my local Next Door app of people taking their rooms for rent and ADUs off the market b/c they’re afraid of squatters.

Lots of ADUs going up in my neighborhood - but they’re not for rent, they’re being built for elderly relatives.

We’re hoping to build an ADU on our daughter’s lot in a few yrs. Right now our city doesn’t allow it unless you’re on the outskirts of the town, but hopefully that’ll change by the time we’re ready to build. Makes so much sense, especially if your family is close. Our SIL thinks of us as his actual parents and our grandchildren are still young enough to benefit from having grandparents a mere few yards away from them.
