It’s not a mistake that most of the first ones Stalin purged were the intellectual class. Those who were capable of fomenting his revolution would also be capable of fomenting dissent against him. Being a university professor in Stalin’s Russia was a dangerous job.
When the Russians moved into the eastern Poland and the Baltics after the German invasion, he rounded up all of the Trotsky communists — because they weren’t HIS brand of communism.
I once read a great book about a westerner caught in Stalin’s Russia at the outbreak of WW2. At one point he was interrogated by the NKVD and he feigned ignorance — that he was just a dumb peasant/farm boy. He said that any sign of real intellect would have been considered counter-revolutionary.
