So, there’s no need for a government mandate or even subsidies then. Let the EV’s compete openly in the market place and if people want to buy them, be our guest. Why does the government need to be involved?

Hence, my comment that this was a major compromise. He planned to require 50% of cars sold to be strictly electric. Automakers announced lawsuits (Toyota and I would suspect Ford?). This is basically admitting temporary defeat while saving face and keeping most of his base happy. (That is, the big-government folks who generally like the idea of the government doing “everything it can” to promote electric cars, but don’t know very much about the issue.)
