Maybe instead of whining anonymously, people can directly address their complaints.

Rule of thumb... don’t post anything on the internet you wouldn’t want to see on a billboard with your name attached.

who would be dumb enough to give their actual name and info?

This kind of thing can EASILY follow that poster forever.
It is easy to see an employee making a true, yet negative post about their current employer more than a year ago. But, for whatever reason is still at that company. quickly getting fired for posting such a negativer review upon being outted.
It is ALSO very easy to see a prospective empoyer NOT hiring a potential employee for “bad mouthing” their previous employers. Even if that post was many years and possibly several positions (for that empolyee) ago.

Did the site owners plan for this to happen from the start?

Not long after Glassdoor was online, I would peruse companies where I knew the real story. It became pretty obvious certain companies were curating reviews. It became a game of "guess which posts where an HR flack drew the straw where he/she had to post about how super duper the company was".
I would not be the least bit surprised if it were found out companies were paying money to have the 'troublemakers' identified.

And this is why I don’t use those companies
Of course, finding work is difficult anyways

Good. People who bitch rather than simply leave SHOULD get fired.
