Men are skipping college: 4 reasons why you should pay attention

Men are turning away from college and the shift could have profound implications for the economy, their health and the American family.

Today, only 39% of young men who have completed high school are enrolled in college, down from 47% in 2011, according to a recent analysis by Pew Research. That works out to about 1 million fewer young men in college compared to just over a decade ago.

The trend isn’t new but as scholars like Richard Reeves have pointed out, the gradual retreat from higher education signals a larger crisis facing boys and men.

Working a trade is good I guess. If you want to spend your whole working life outside, working without heat or A/C. If you find that attractive go for it. I prefer good indoor work with women around that I pretend not to notice.

The comment about a “suitable” husband exposes that women don’t want to “play man” (as the breadwinner) while Mr. Mom takes care of the kids (he doesn’t need college for this).

Colleges are in trouble because more and more white-collar jobs (those believed to require college) have now followed the manufacturing jobs out of the country - and if they haven’t, the employers are trafficking scads of Asian coolies here to do the work. Why would any American invest 4 years and a boatload of money to learn skills no employer wants (in an American, at least)? That is before the political and DIE considerations (I know; I prefer it to DEI); if few employers are allowed to hire you anyway, why bother?

I’ve pointed out on related threads for years now: THE ONLY REASON THESE STORIES EVEN APPEAR IS BECAUSE THE AMERICAN WOMEN ARE UNHAPPY WITH THE OUTCOME. When you see those dopey white girls welcoming refugees, understand they’re just creating a situation where “passport bros” don’t have to travel at all to find a more traditional woman - they are being trafficked directly into our towns now.

They are supposedly trying the “asexual reproduction” route (sperm banks, frozen eggs, etc.); very costly and risky, but they have time and money to burn - the cats aren’t going anywhere...

"Men are skipping college: 4 reasons why you should pay attention"

Add to that the "demographic cliff" for colleges, scheduled to start in 2025 school year.

Now, present Tesla production is accomplished by robots. Also, at present, the stationary assembly robots are being provided the parts to assemble by AI functioning robots that are free to move around as necessary to accomplish the assigned task.

Human labor in the process is seriously reduced. None of the various manufacturing robots went to college. All of the robots were set to eork by real people who had completed college.

Robots have no collars

Actually, this is needed as there is a desperate need for practical skills that the trades provide.

When TSHTF, degrees in DEI, women’s studies, sociology, experience in HR and financial planners are going to provide NOTHING but useless, starving bodies to feed.

My son always wanted to work a trade so he skipped college. In his trade, he works inside all day. In the early years he worked hard on a crew (inside work, lots of demo), and due to his work ethic and leadership ability, his company paid for his certifications and now he is a project manager with his own crew and accounts. He has a company truck, great benefits, and makes six figures. No union.

Not all trades are outside jobs.

I agree. Pretty stupid article (and I did actually read it)

I just finished reading Atlas Shrugged (again) and it sounds to me more like men are "Going Galt" with respect to college.

What guy wants to go to college where nobody wants him, and the environment makes no bones about letting males know how bad, toxic, and evil they are, actually codifying it into codes, policies, procedures, and baking it into the formal curriculums? Normal men aren't going to go for it, and the only ones who DO, are largely men who are men in chromosome structure only. And even then.

College is not about competency anymore. It is now about indoctrination and checking boxes. It is about fostering, in the words of Ayn Rand in her book "The Aristocracy of Pull".

The real world, where the rubber meets the road, where reality determines how competent you really are, is likely where more men are going.

It IS a problem though, because it means men are abandoning the managerial positions to females, and while I have worked for stellar female managers, overall, I don't like it at all.

And it means even more women in politics, the very fever swamp of the worst in human nature.

Orwell wrote this in 1984 and has taken much heat for it, and those criticizing him attribute it to misogyny. Anyone who has observed politics knows the truth of this:

"Winston had disliked her from the very first moment of seeing her. He knew the reason. It was because of the atmosphere of hockey−fields and cold baths and community hikes and general clean−mindedness which she managed to carry about with her. He disliked nearly all women, and especially the young and pretty ones. It was always the women, and above all the young ones, who were the most bigoted adherents of the Party, the swallowers of slogans, the amateur spies and nosers−out of unorthodoxy."

And while it is absolutely, 100% not a blanket statement, there is truth in it comparatively speaking, and we will get a greater number of these types making policy in both government and business.

There was a time we wanted our young men to become smarter

People are smart, or they're not. School doesn't change that.

Which trade is inside?

Going to college has a benefit that you mostly work with a higher caliber/intellence people. If you want to be around lunk heads go for it. I worked construction (pipe fitting/sheet metal)in college to pay bills. I know of what I speak.

"There was a time we wanted our young men to become smarter"

Nowadays, going to college seems to have the opposite effect on those who participate in "Higher Education".

From the Article: “Over a lifetime, workers with bachelor’s degrees typically earn $1.2 million more than those with only a high school diploma.”

This is a very deceptive statement because it focuses on earnings, not the cost of the education to achieve those earnings or the opportunities lost while pursuing the education.

That is true. You cannot teach engineering, chemistry, metallurgy, or surgery on the fly to a walk-in.

I have two degrees, one I never used (Chemistry) and one I DID use, but do not any longer (Nuclear Medicine). My assessment of college, from when I was in it, was that it mostly taught me “how to think”, and less on “how to do”. I learned far more on the job than I did in college, but...I had to know the technical underpinnings to the work before I could begin to learn on the job.

So, yes. Unless men want to wholly surrender those STEM fields to females, men will need to attend college to learn the fundamentals that cannot be taught on the job, or even by a technical school.

As for women vs. men in college?

This nation has dedicated billions of dollars over the last 40 years trying to “overcome” the “sexist barriers” to women entering various STEM fields, but even with all that money spent, attention given, affirmative action applied, preferences and quotas disproportionally applied, psychic massaging, application of victimhood mentality, women STILL only make up 13% of the Electrical Engineers in the workforce.

It is one of three things-women aren’t smart enough to do it, women aren’t naturally inclined to do it, or women don’t want to do it.

My money is on “women aren’t naturally inclined to do it” due to a variety of reasons. And often the same reasons in reverse that men are not inclined to go into nursing.

To many, that makes me a “sexist”. So be it. Facts are facts.

It isn’t due to barriers intentionally put in place to keep men out of nursing, and yes, there are men who DO go into nursing, and are quite good. It is due to the fact that men are not inclined to go into nursing.
