It certainly will be seen by Iran as an escalation, but

1. It wasn't the Iranian embassy that was struck.

2. Those killed in the attack were Hezbollah and IRGC, both of which are designated terrorist organizations. They were meeting to facilitate attacks on Israel.

Isn't crossing a state's legal border to attack a diplomatic compound an act of war against not one, but two countries --- the host country (Syria) and its invited international guest (Iran)?

What would we do if any country crossed into Qatar and bombed the diplomatic US compound? What's Israel going to do when Israeli diplomatic compounds become the target of similar retaliation?

This *is* Israeli escalation --- and I fear our diplomats/military in the region and around the world will pay the price.

Syria has invited both the IRGC and Hezbollah into their country as "guests" for the specific purpose of attacking Israel and killing Jewish people. The purpose of the meeting that was being held in the targeted building was planning the deaths of more Israelis. That is pretty important context.

As far as US and Israeli embassies being targeted, both countries embassies have been targeted many times, particularly in the Middle East, where embassy attacks are quite common. In particular, Iran has attacked our embassies several times, including taking 53 diplomats hostage in 1979, and Iran backed Hezbollah (then called "Islamic Jihad") bombing our embassy in Beirut in 1983, killing 63 people. In fact, Hezbollah/IRGC have attacked numerous embassies, including multiple attacks on US embassies and countless more on Israel's. Iran has never had respect for the diplomatic missions of Israel or the USA.

It’s calculated risk by Israel.

Every time since their “Revolution” that Iran has been forcibly confronted with demonstrably superior firepower, Iran has backed down.

Iran does NOT want a direct war with the US, and they most certainly don’t want Bibi to haul out a few nukes.
