U.S. tells Iran it “had no involvement” in Israel strike
Adios, Apr 1, 2024

The U.S. told Iran that it “had no involvement” or advanced knowledge of an Israeli strike on a diplomatic compound in Syria that killed a senior Iranian general, according to a U.S. official.

The rare message shows the Biden administration is deeply concerned that the Israeli strike could lead to a regional escalation and the resumption of attacks by pro-Iranian militias against U.S. forces.

Israel notified the Biden administration a few minutes before its air force conducted the strike but didn’t ask for a U.S. green light, Israeli and U.S. officials said.

A U.S. official said the Israeli heads-up wasn’t detailed and arrived when the military jets were already in the air. The Israelis didn’t tell the U.S., for example, that they were planning to bomb a building in the Iranian embassy compound.

The strike took place shortly before White House national security adviser Jake Sullivan and Secretary of State Blinken started a secure video conference call with top Israeli officials to discuss alternatives to an Israeli ground invasion in Rafah.

From the NY Times -—

“Iran’s foreign minister, Hossein Amir Abdollahian, said in a post on the social media site X that Iran had summoned the Swiss ambassador after midnight local time and asked that an important message be delivered to Washington: That as Israel’s ally, the “U.S. must answer” for Israel’s actions. Switzerland acts as the United States’ representative in the absence of diplomatic relations between Tehran and Washington.

In Washington, a spokeswoman for the National Security Council, Adrienne Watson, said that “the United States had no involvement in the strike” and “did not know about it ahead of time.”

A U.S. official, who requested anonymity to discuss private communication, said that the statement had been communicated directly to Iran.”

Tx. From a related Axios article:

Iran's ambassador to Syria, Hossein Akbari, said Israeli fighter jets fired six missiles from the Golan Heights that hit the consulate building.

He said he was in his office at the embassy when the strike took place.

So the weapon(s) that hit the adjacent building, was(were) kinetic penetrators.
