Republican Speaker Johnson makes fresh push for Ukraine aid
BBC via Yahoo ^ | April 2nd, 2024 | Anthony Zurcher - BBC North America correspondent

Republican Speaker of the House Mike Johnson has a plan for getting new military assistance for Ukraine approved by Congress - and for keeping his tenuous hold on power.

With Democrats wary and a Republican right flank eyeing open rebellion, however, Mr Johnson may find that even the best-laid plans could quickly unravel.

The Louisiana congressman told Fox News he would push the House - which has the narrowest of Republican majorities - to structure new Ukraine support in the form of loans.

To help cover the costs he suggested authorising the US government to seize and sell Russian assets frozen since the start of the Ukraine war.

"If we can use the seized assets of Russian oligarchs to allow the Ukrainians to fight them, that's just pure poetry," said Mr Johnson.

An estimated $300bn (£239bn) in Russian central bank assets have been frozen - although most of this is under European, not American, control.

As an additional sweetener for his Republican colleagues, he also proposed tying the passage of Ukraine aid to legislation ending a hold on new liquefied natural gas export authorisations. The hold was imposed by the Biden administration in January at the behest of environmental activists.

Like many here I originally had high hopes for this guy.

But he has since manifest as a dunce and a clown.

Remove him.

Remove him.

After the election, we don’t need anymore “musical chair” speaker election drama until Trump wins in November.

Then “Have at It.”

If DC is stupid enough to do that, it would be a FAFO moment. But Johnson's comment--that surprises me coming from a supposedly devout man.

The situation in the Ukraine is an epic disaster that is largely the responsibility of Joe Biden.

We are now at a point where the Ukraine has lost the war and is about to collapse.

This is not a good thing for anyone and the collapse of the Ukraine will have very negative global consequences and with will destabilize the region.

We have one last chance to end this conflict with a negotiated settlement

I am totally opposed to blowing more assets in Ukraine to throw good money after bad.

If Speaker Johnson can negotiate a funding package that forces the Biden Admin to enter into immediate diplomatic negotiations to arrive at a cease fire and end to the conflict , one last round of funding to facilitate this would be money very well spent and he will be a hero in my eyes,

And that’s exactly what the globalists want!! We are part of Ukraine’s collapse so as to take a step toward globalism.

FOR Ukraine aid?! How about redirecting that money to the border and to deporting illegals? NOT A PENNY MORE FOR UKRAINE! Why did he sell out? What have so many members of congress sold out to Ukraine?

We’re in the danger zone. He’s been pretending but the mask is starting to drop. If it goes all the way and just rips it off then there won’t be any reason to go full Uniparty. Ukraine funds first ... “Prevent Trump from legislating” legislation and “Comprehensive immigration reform” (i.e. open border preservation and American citizen minimization act) next.

The guy is totally inept. That’s why the GOP has lost what, three seats needlessly, starting with their own stupid expulsion of Santos?

Jeez, it’s like ‘The Invasion of the Body Snatchers’. He’s now apparently a firm believer in the Globalists’ Ukraine Project and also been transformed into an OTHER-PEOPLE’S-MONEY advocate— even if that helps the destruction of the American dollar as THE world’s reserve currency.

Folks, you think you’ve seen inflation? You haven’t seen anything yet. Wait til the US can no longer EXPORT INFLATION,

This isn't musical chairs. And as long as the Dems have the Senate and Biden has his magic pen, we have to deal with the bast that's on the table.

A new speaker will have the same cr** on the table. Things MUST be done. You can't just hide under a rock or wish it away.

Get out the vote!!

And go after the Dems...not our guys.

The Dems will not sign off on our terms for the border, i.e., HR2...They've said it from the day it was passed in May 2023 and has been sitting in the Senate ever since.

He hasn't caved...he just can't and no one can...make the Dems cave.

What a disappointment. Such big talk and he caves to the Left at the first opportunity.

The situation in the Ukraine is an epic disaster that is largely the responsibility of Joe Biden.

My assessment of the Ukraine war is that Putin saw Biden as weak. So he decided that he had his opportunity and went for Ukraine. Other American presidents may have been more assertive in protecting Ukraine

We are now at a point where the Ukraine has lost the war and is about to collapse.

So we're not going to abandon Ukraine. We'll have to step up the war effort. More drones. Whatever they need.

It’s all fun and games until the United States government seizes and sells the assets in your bank and brokerage accounts.

They don’t need military assistance they need to get to the negotiating table and cut a deal and move on. 😣

The time to do that was late 2022 - early 2023 when Ukraine had the momentum.

Either the Republican party starts representing its base or it must die if this country is to survive as we knew it.

Anyone voting for more money to Ukraine is unfit for office.
