Gavin Newsom’s Restaurant Offering Job at $ 16 Per Hour Despite New State Law of $ 20 Per Hour For Fast Food Workers

California Gov. Gavin Newsom is facing backlash after a restaurant he partially owns posted a job listing for $16 an hour when a new state law is forcing fast food eateries to pay their employees $20 an hour.

PlumpJack Cafe in Olympic Valley – which is among a group of eateries owned by a company Newsom founded in 1992 – is hiring a part-time busser who “will aim to assist the food server … to ensure guest satisfaction during all aspects of the dining experience,” according to a ZipRecruiter posting.

The job listing states the salary for the busser is $16 an hour plus tips.

But a food service worker would make more working at a McDonald’s than at the high-end restaurant and bar thanks to the new $20 fast food minimum wage that went into effect Monday.

Yes, Plumpjack is not fast food, but Newsom says business need to be forced to pay that much. I assume restaurants like this say their workers are more skilled.

If I am not mistaken, at restaurants like tis, servers have to split their tips with busboys, line cooks, hosts/hostesses, etc. So tips ware watered down for everybody.

Isn’t there an Alinsky rule that you make your opponent live by their own rules.

Newsom also got the exception in that places that make bread are exempt, like his billionaire campaign donor the CEO of Panera. 🍞🥯

In Illinois there is a bill that will do away with paying less than min. if there are tips that would bring the person above min.
So if now restaurants will have to pay min, and the worker receives tips currently.

My prediction will be an overall drop in the workers wadges.

I know many bat tenders, etc, that make over $100 an hour in tips now.

I feel many will reduce tips if they know the worker is receiving min hourly now as to before they were not.

They should arrest anyone caught trying to give a tip.

Plumpjack is also not a national chain.

“according to a ZipRecruiter posting.”

Doesn’t seem legal for recruiting firms to discriminate against everyone but Asians.

I don’t believe that is part of the law. Some fast-food is one off. Also, some places that are chains are operated by a franchisee, who could own as little as one restuarant.

You’re correct. A restaurant (as defined) chain with at least 60 applicable stores, but all locations nationwide are counted toward the 60.

All this controversy reminds me of when I last worked. It was a skilled technician job. Pay was based on commission at a fixed rate. If you did the job in LESS than time permitted(usually a flat rate from a book or what some supervisor guessed was fair)then you made more than hourly rate. What happened on many jobs was that it took MORE than flat rate time to do the job,so then you made less per hour. And no one cared if you made less. Your pay depended a lot on being able to complete a job FAST, which could be counter-productive compared to doing it right & complete.
