STRASBOURG, France, April 9 (Reuters) - Europe's top human rights court ruled on Tuesday that the Swiss government had violated the human rights of its citizens by failing to do enough to combat climate change.

The European Court of Human Rights's (ECtHR) decision on the case brought by more than 2,000 elderly Swiss women set a precedent that will resonate across Europe and beyond for how courts deal with a growing trend of climate litigation.

The Swiss women, known as KlimaSeniorinnen, argued their government's climate inaction put them at risk of dying during heatwaves.

In her ruling, Court President Siofra O'Leary said the Swiss government had failed to meet targets for cutting greenhouse gas emissions and that there had been gaps in its domestic regulatory framework.

"It is clear that future generations are likely to bear an increasingly severe burden of the consequences of present failures and omissions to combat climate change," O'Leary said.

Crazy. They sued the government because it’s not controlling enough. This noose is too loose.

Those are called hot flashes - and have nothing to do with the weather. :)

Why would elderly Swiss women be worried about the future that we can’t predict

Fortunately, Switzerland is not a member of the European Union.

The law suit is a crude attempt to force Switzerland to abandon it’s independence.

Odd thing about “human rights” is that it always seems to be just a tool for oppression.

Just wow...so, here’s how you destroy your own government - the ‘top court’ holding politicians legally liable for not doing what the court thinks it should respective to climate change.

Nobody will want to run. Guess who will...everyone that can use the race card. Their government will do a 180 on the people the moment it happens and these ‘to court’ judges will have their a** handed to them.

Genius. So enlightened.

The Swiss government should start by reducing the pensions of these 2,000 elderly Swiss women ,it’s clear they get way too much to be able to waste it on garbage like this

Yes. Unfortunately, I have come to the conclusion Heinlein did quite a bit to help bring us to this point.

I never knew that the Swiss can control the temperature in their own little country by enacting their own legislation. I’ve heard that residents of upper NYS would prefer fewer monster snow storms. Maybe they should sue their legislature for inadequate carbon emissions to warm-up their region.
