And yet you believe that wolves are not that dangerous.

If you are from Texas, you probably have never encountered wolves as the last ones were killed in 1970. Since then there have not been any known wolves in Texas.

Having seen the carnage that a small number of wolves can inflict on sheep overnight, I’d rather deal with coyotes than wolves any day.

I think your deep respect for coyotes is born of the fact that you have not dealt with larger predators. Coyotes can be dangerous, but, ultimately, they are still small predators. When I have hunted coyotes, I have never worried about them, normally, if I a thinking about predator risks, I am worrying about mountain lions and bears.

Wolves on the other hand are apex predators, and full grown males can weigh close to 200 pounds. I disagree with your statement that coyotes are not afraid of humans. Every coyote I have encountered has treated me with respect indicating its belief that I could be dangerous. I suspect that coyotes are not as afraid of humans as they used to be, but that is merely because we do not kill them with sufficient enthusiasm to warrant fear.

Again you are making incorrect assumptions-where do you live? I have lived around coyotes all my life, as well as mountain lions, snakes, feral hogs, etc-I know what predators behave in what way. We have plenty of mountain lions here, and I walk in the woods all the time, like a lot of other people do-if I see their tracks near the trail I’m on, I back out of that trail, waving my arms and singing loudly. I also carry bear spray. Not a sidearm because you don’t know who might be in the woods, and shooting is not a good idea with neighbors and goats, cattle, etc only a few acres away.

There is livestock all over the place-no mountain lion kills in over 30 years-just coyotes and feral dog kills. There has never been a human killed or seriously injured by a mountain lion int this state ever-no bear attacks, either.

My 1st husband and I lived off grid in a remote area of NM for awhile, where there are a lot of bears and mountain lions. No one in those remote areas had a bear or lion problem-but the idiots in the burbs who moved there from Cali did-because they feed the bears and mountain lions, just like in Cali-which is why there are so many predator attacks there-duh!

Unlike people in California and a couple of other states, we have sense enough to leave the predators alone and we do not tempt tempt them by leaving out trash, pet food or pets. We also fence livestock with 6-8 ft game fencing-sometimes with an electric top or bottom wire to keep stock in and predators out.

There are bears in this county-west of here, but coming this way. They were re-introduced-along with the Mexican wolves-because the stupid people killed them all and unbalanced everything-so the fish and game people put them back-oh, the horror! we’re all going to die, along with our livestock-if we don’t kill them again- now! NOT...

People here are not into killing any animal to extinction-not is it going to be allowed by the game wardens in any case-the fines for that are ruinous-we need natural balance since so many people hunt-game animals need to be healthy and that means the proper balance of predator and prey. Too many coyotes-and the damn feral hogs-f*** that up, but mountain lions do eat the hogs when they can ambush them, and maybe the bears will like them, too. We do not kill animals with “sufficient enthusiasm” to make them extinct-it isn’t allowed any more than poaching is. We just learn to live with the animals in the natural world-any one who can’t needs to live in a city, period. I choose to live where there are woods, fields, livestock and wild animals but not a lot of people-and I don’t have a problem with any predators or prey who are living in those woods-they are to be appreciated at a distance, not ever approached or tempted with food-and left strictly alone.
