Most nukes would be air bursts. Ground bursts are where the fallout comes from.
So, if you survive the detonation and you can protect yourself for a few weeks, your chances of near term survival are OK.
Long term would depend on your location, your resources, and your community.
Airbursts make the best EMP. The country would be depopulated in a matter of weeks.
