The judge is a real piece of work. In criminal cases such as this, defendants are compelled to attend the trial which includes the voir dire. Here, the Judge should called a one day recess to permit Trump to attend the Supreme Court hearing.
This is a personal vendetta between all the NYC judges and Trump. Remember that Engoron wouldn't let President Trump attend his mother-in-law's funeral, too.
I believe that all the judges want to inflict maximum pain on Trump while they can.
