FAA investigating near collision of two jets at Reagan National Airport
WTOP ^

The Federal Aviation Administration confirmed to WTOP it is investigating a near collision that occurred Thursday morning at Reagan National Airport in Arlington, Virginia.

Two passenger jets came within 400 feet of each other before controllers took last-minute evasive action and immediately stopped the two planes. It’s not clear why the jets were authorized to be on the same runway at the same time.

Both planes were cleared to be where they were headed. It’s pretty clear the “investigation” should be focused on the control tower.

The only voice I heard on the news excerpts sounded like the short black woman in the Police Academy movies. Maybe she is the one who took charge after others made mistakes.

Yes, this is a bad one. The plane on the runway was under air traffic control and the taxiing plane, which may have still been under ground control, was cleared to cross an active runway with a plane lined up for takeoff.

....this sort of thing is only going to get worse...did the ATC people communicate with the ground controllers, or what...? this could have been a disaster...

Yet another problem with a Boeing 737 MAX. That airplane is a pile of garbage.
(Please note the tagline...)

The good news is both pilots had visual so they probably would have stopped regardless of what the tower said. The southwest flight was rolling slow so stopping probably would have not been an issue. The JetBlue plane was taking off so he would have likely not been able to stop if the southwest plane did not.

That’s crazy. My son and his fiancee flew out of Reagan on Southwest yesterday, but not their flight.
