Its not really the same thing. Susan Smith just said a black man carjacked her, she wasn't claiming to be the victim of a hate crime and she wasn't trying to stir up racial hatred. Even so her family came out afterwards and apologized to the blacks in their community. Think we'll see that here?

This may be the only absolutely provable "hate crime." That is - when you falsely accuse someone of a different color of attacking you. Hmmmm. Bears some thinking about...

Though as I understand, Smith used the imaginary black man as a scapegoat for the crime she committed, rather than committing the crime in order to accuse blacks. Both are bad (And directly, Smith's was far worse), but they are not technically the same race-wise.

Not really, Susan Smith killed her children then made up a story to try to get away with it. She didn't intentionally say it was a black person in order to stir up racist tensions.

This woman, going so far as to mutilate her flesh merely to stir up racial tension and cause people to blame whites for being racist. This was an act of pure pathological hatred and is IMHO a Hate Crime.
