Miraculously, he & all his company survived. They were ordered to remain in a staging area a short distance away from the WTC. While they were awaiting orders from their Commander (who had gone to the WTC command post); the first tower collapsed.

They were able to dig out their Commander who was badly injured and get him on a ferry to Staten Island for medical help.

They also joined in the efforts to find those injured in the attack.

Noreen didn't know that he was okay until he returned home late on the night of 9-11.
