The Reality of a False Safety
myself ^ | 9/19/01 | Me

On Sept. 11, 2001 the worst single terrorist incident in history took place in the United States of America. As of the day of this writing, 5400+ people are missing in New York City as a direct result of two hijacked airplanes crashing into the World Trade Center Towers.

Could the attack been prevented? Doubtful, though possible. Could the attack been thwarted? Yes. Had but a single person on each of those planes been armed, the hijackers would have been stopped. Will law abiding citizens be able to arm themselves on such flights? Not likely.

This incident brings up a chilling and disturbing fact... Gun Control kills. This isn't a singular event, but many times across the nation, we have seen the blood of innocent men, women and especially children shed in the name of a false safety that doesn't exist.

A young girl in California died due to a poorly thought out law barring her from having the ability to have access to the gun that could have saved her life.

In Columbine, two deranged individuals had an uncontested rampage through a high school as they violated the "Gun Free Schools" law that is supposed to keep our children safe. In reality, It made them fish in a barrel for criminals to attack at will.

There are many, many more instances but the key point is made. Most of the attacks are made in areas or places which bars people from defending themselves. Is this a coincidence? No. Criminals do not choose victims that can easily defend themselves. Criminals, being the cowards they are, choose unarmed, easily victimized individuals or places to attack.

This trend will only get worse as more gun bans, gun control and restrictions are passed into law. The only solution is to stop the trend now by stopping these ill conceived laws and eliminating the laws that currently make it easy for criminals to victimize our society. To this end, I urge everyone who cares about their safety, the safety of their family, children, and other loved ones to write to the President, Vice President, Congress, and yes, even the Supreme Court and tell them that no more gun control will be tolorated.

Our lives mean more than the false safety of disarmament. As long as we remain unable to defend ourselves and place our safety in the hands of a government that cannot in reality protect us, the bloody toll will continue to rise and get worse.

Defend your lives by defending your right to keep and bear arms. All of our lives depend on it now. Please pass this along to everyone you care for. Spread the word so we can stop the bloodshed.

Michael

Guns on aircraft aren't the answer to hijacking.
Get rid of that flight deck aft door.

This goes far, far beyond guns on airplanes. This is for the safety of everyone, on the ground, in a car, in the air, it doesn't matter. The time to end the carnage is now.

Oh, and ask the Israeli's about guns on airplanes.

Mike:
As a pilot, as NRA, as CCW, as a fan of John Lott, and having flown often on El Al and otherwise with Israelis:
Sir, go forth with the philosophy of "an armed society is a polite society", however, IMHO
The first remedy for hijacking is keeping hijackers out of the cockpit.
You've got your opinion, I've got mine, they aren't the same.

I agree, the first remedy is to keep them out of the cockpit... but what happens if/when they breach the door? What happens if they can't and they tell the pilot, "Do as I say or I begin to kill passengers?" Just denying access to the cockpit only resolves one part of the whole issue. It does not solve the problem of hijackers overall. All it does is protect the pilots from immediate harm. What does it do for the passengers?

But that is only one issue, the restrictions on people defending themselves goes far beyond airplanes. What solution can be presented to save the lives of those who are not able to defend themselves due to laws designed to make us easier victims?

The brain trust of the US Govt. and Israel obviously disagree with the notion that guns on aircraft are dangerous and/or of no benefit, to wit: Sky Marshalls; undercover, armed police officers aboard ElAl jets.

Associates of mine--metro police officers--and others I know of--permitted carriers with military background, usually travelling to FL--tell me of the pilots of the jets on which they have travelled, regularly sitting them in first-class, just behind the cockpit door, with the firearm they were formerly transporting in luggage. So , it seems, many pilots also disagree with that notion.

My dear brother and sister FReepers,

At this, of all times in my lifetime, I would like nothing more than to be able to read these threads and reply to them.  I have much I would like to say.

BUT, I cannot!

Why?

Because I am trying hard to raise the finances needed to keep FreeRepublic up and running so that we can continue to share valuable information and respond to it.

I beg you, if you have not yet donated to FreeRepublic this quarter,  do so now!

If you have already donated, THANK YOU VERY MUCH AND GOD BLESS YOU, please ping your friends, and FReep on...!

I realize you are giving to lots of Relief efforts and I encourage you to do so.  But we need to help FR too.  Where would we be right now without it?

If you have no money, please come and bump the Fundraiser Thread.

I would really like to reach our goal quickly so that I and the rest of the dedicated FReepers who are working the Fundraiser Threads can participate in what is undeniably the most important time in FreeRepublic's history.

WHERE WOULD YOU GET YOUR NEWS FROM IF FREEREPUBLIC WASN'T HERE?<--click here

I don't have a solution for personal safety amongst the passengers.
However, IMHO the concept of "cockpit door" is antique. The original reasons no longer exist, and only inertia prevents the flight deck from having no aft door to breach. Flight decks can have small food service utilities, a toilet, and other appropriate amenities (including space for relief crews.)
Yes, including an exterior door.
That was pitched to airlines and FAA decades ago, but not acceptable to them.
I'm VERY familiar with what exists now.
Sadly, I do not have the power to modify cockpits now, nor do you fine folks have the power to make airline decisions.
You might read the history of Rome's greatest military General, a guy named Scipio Africanus: he has some interesting and successful ideas that curtailed terrorism. I.E. deny the tools of terrorism.
Adios.

The first remedy for hijacking is keeping hijackers out of the cockpit.

Earlier intervention may be to keep them first out of the country, you think?

What does it do for the passengers?

It is very obvious that this has not been a concern for the airline industry for quite some time.

No.
I don't think we have the technology to identify hijackers before they are hijackers, and I'm not about to suggest humans are smart enough to screen for the future.
If I had a nickel for everyone taking a/c - simulator time in this country, I could afford to buy Boeing and enough airlines to rebuild cockpits.
.....and I don't think native borns are immune to crime.
