Brokaw: Bush, GOP Deserve as Much Blame as Clinton for Terror Attacks

"NBC Nightly News" anchorman Tom Brokaw sought to deflect criticism of ex-President Clinton Wednesday morning in the wake of last week's terrorist attacks, saying that President Bush and the GOP also deserve blame for not making terrorism as issue during last year's presidential campaign.

"I do think that it was a failure of (the Clinton) administration not to take it on. But it wasn't a high priority of this administration either coming into office," Brokaw told radioman Don Imus.

"I mean, George W. Bush didn't make fighting terrorism a big part of his campaign at all," the anchorman complained. "You know, they were talking about reorganizing the U.S. military but we haven't heard anything about -- "We've got to secure this country against a terrorist attack.'"

Next the NBC anchor turned his ire towards Republican congressional leaders. "God knows, on Capitol Hill one expert after another, one commission after another went up there when Republicans were in charge and said, 'They're coming. We're vulnerable. We could take a terrible hit.'"

Brokaw also said the media share blame for not giving enough coverage to the attack on the U.S.S. Cole and the trial of 1993's World Trade Center bombers.

The NBC News anchor's defense of the ex-president came just hours after his own interview with Clinton, who blamed the CIA for implementing restrictions on spy recruitment that experts now say helped the Twin Tower terrorists conceal their plans.

In two days, "W" will have been in office 9 months. The liberal shitheads are trying to pin the failures that started 8 years ago on him.

My Message:

Mr. Brokaw,
Get with the game. Now is the time to support the USA and President Bush. The fact that you are spouting such negative indicates that possibly you are one of those who is against the USA and President Bush.

There's enough blame to go around. Beginning with the bombing of our military barracks in the mid-80s, America has shrugged off acts of terror, even against their own. We talked a good game about finding those responsible but rarely followed through and the subject was quickly forgotten. Republicans can be blamed. Democrats can be blamed. The media can be blamed. The CIA, Army, Navy, FBI all can share the blame. So can our allies. This happened because the free world *collectively* has dropped the ball.

And there will be those who will lobby us to drop it again, to say the cost of retribution is too great, the enemy too stealthy, the victims just unfortunate casualties of "chickens coming home to roost". Rest assured they will say the same thing with each subsequent terrorist attack.

George W. Bush has decided that last week's atrocities were the last straw. He is trying to prepare us for a long engagement to wipe out those who would use these tactics against us and it will cost us. But the fight is worth it.

He is trying to put in us the will to interrupt our daily lives and focus on a battle he knows won't be won overnight. He knows America can win this war. What he fears is that they won't bother to. Enormous and sustained public support will be needed, especially if a second attack occurs.

He must turn a wimpy America back into steely men. Thank God that at least he will try.

Dear Tom,

As long as we are assigning blame , I'll tell you exactly who is to blame and its not Bush. For 8 years Clinton allowed this country to be attacked indiscriminately without once making any terrorists pay the ultimate price. His war on terrorism lasted exactly as long as Monica Lewinski's testimony.

What is even worse though is that you and you're colleagues, specifically you, Rather, Jennings, the New York Times, the Washington Post and a host of Clinton idolaters convinced the unknowing and the dimwitted that it was all about sex. Well, what it was all about Mr. Brokaw was dead Americans, nuclear secrets and the pardoning of terrorists. You have done a disservice to yourself, your family and your country and your feeble attempt to shift that blame unto the back of the Bush administration makes me so mad I could spit.

You are a disgraceful American Mr. Brokaw. All about sex my ass.

You miss the point here Tex. The left is mounting an attack on W. It goes like this. He is a dumb, warmonger who wants to start a crusade against Muslims just because he was too stupid to do anything about the attack before it happened.

They will try to shift public opinion support away from Bush so that he will not be able to attack terrorism freely. Thats the reality.

Brokaw is such an idiot. I thought the leader of the free world was supposed to lead. But since Clinton decided everything by taking a poll, he was a coward not to take this on and a failure as a leader. His decision would have been based on a poll that asked the people how important do you think the threat of terrorism is? The anchors at the nightly news would say the poll says there is no threat, then he would praise Clintons skill as a politician. Actually Brokaw is right, about one thing, they were so happy to investigate and ruminate every Republican failure, they didn't do their jobs. Brokaw, not part of the solution, part of the problem.

regards

"You know, they were talking about reorganizing the U.S. military but we haven't heard anything about -- "We've got to secure this country against a terrorist attack.'"

Actually, I believe this was on his mind when he spoke several weeks back (during his "summer vacation") to a group of veterans. He mentioned the need to prepare our military for the new century and new threats. I don't remember if he specifically mentioned terrorism, but the implication was very clear. At the time I told my husband, "President Bush is a man of vision. He's looking way into the future to see what he can do NOW for our national security." I'm sure his speech was reported on a thread; just haven't done a search for it yet.

Why didn't Brokaw and his other liberal media friends make terrorism an issue in the campaign? I don't recall them pressing Bush or Gore on this topic. They were too busy worrying about GW"s drunk driving arrest from 20 years ago. If terrorism was sooooo much on their minds why didn't they hound the candidates endlessly on that topic? They like to present themselves as the guardians of American freedom. Well. where were they? What a hypocrite this guy is

My e-mail Subject: brokaw needs to retire:

I just read the comments made by tom brokaw attempting to run cover for clinton and his anti-American/liberal administration that practically gave away our defenses and military secrets over the past 8 years. By trying to lay blame at the feet of President Bush and Republican members of Congress he once again shows his true colors.

For some reason nightly news anchorpersons seem to think they have a Constitutional right/obligation to inject their personal feelings/opinions/biases into their reporting on the events transpiring around them. brokaw is one of the worst offenders when it comes to expressing his open disdain for conservative values and those who represent them as he participates in a one man crusade to trumpet the superiority of liberal partisan politics, agendas and personalities.

If you wonder why people are flocking to FOX News Channel...watch reruns of your own programs and read reported comments of your on air representatives.

God Bless America!

Tex didn't miss the point; he's making a larger point.

Mr. Walsh, to obsess over these little leftist weenies and their smoke-blowing efforts is to lend them a credibility they no longer possess.

IMHO.
