I don't hate change, I only hate BAD change. Contrary to the cliche, not all change is good i.m.h.o. and what I've seen of CSS so far, it ain't so good.

Contrary to the cliche, not all change is good i.m.h.o. and what I've seen of CSS so far, it ain't so good.I have to agree, custom css's are a huge hassle, with some benefit but it messes everything up, there's no continuity between what people post and what people will see.
A better solution would be to several official css's, which all look exactly the same, except they have different color schemes, and let people pick the one they want.

Im sure John Robinson will have a style for those folks who hate change.When I get the time, I'm going to make an "FR Classic" style.
It won't be perfectly true to the original (because the fundamental layout of FR has changed), but it will have the same colors and style. That's assuming nobody else makes one first.

Letting people choose color schemes quite frankly scares me. This is something that's best left to the professionals. If you've spent any time on the web I'm sure you've seen those flouresent GREEN/RED/YELLOW/BLUE/BLACK things that people-particularly hackers- are so fond of. Add font choices, flashing GIF's and variously sized JPG's into the mix and well, you get the picture.

I'm sorry. I'm really talking out of my a** here. I know very little about CSS and I'm gonna look at a tutorial as soon as I can. It only just dawned on me that the code in this thread isn't supposed to be code, it's art that my browser can't "see" so I'm gonna have to update my browsers as well.
O.K., I'll shut my stupid pie hole now.

Actually, whatever they choose as their own customized cascading style sheet wont be seen by anyone besides them. So if they like having font at 36pt Wingdings then by all means thats what they like. Its personalized for the people who know what they are doing and John will set up the templates for the people who dont want to mess with it ( or have a default). I think its a great idea. it also help people with the same interests become more familiar with other Freepers. Its all good.

I noticed you changed the layout to fit the old style. Was there a poll I missed?

You might be interested in my "Anti-CSS CSS" (the classic pre-css FR look). It's not perfect, mostly because the layout of FR has changed, but it looks mostly the same.
John, this might be a good "default" css for people who haven't installed one, so the beta threads don't look like a total mess.

Next on my to-do list: Make an "
AndrewSullivan.com"-style css for people who really like purple
(OK, I was only kidding there!)

There are now two body classes which correspond to the current template.
fr_classic_thread - the old style
fr_focus_thread - the new style
There could potentially be other fr_*_thread classes, each corresponding to a template.
Bump for later...

I can see you're changing stuff right now. It seems the fr_classic_thread tag is being applied to the new beta threads. Maybe I need to leave you alone for a while on this.
I just updated the style sheets on the web site. I'll keep after it until I get it right later. I'm still working on the standalone HTML stylesheet editor.

Was working on this as well (almost had the background images thoroughly de-bugged in NS6/IE6), and things changed again. Oh well; that's what we get for working on beta <VBG>

Actually, whatever they choose as their own customized cascading style sheet wont be seen by anyone besides them. That's interesting. Until now, I've thought that publishers were very pro CSS because it ensured that every end viewer would see the exact same thing-no matter what platform they were using-in theory anyway. So it looks like there's more than one use for CSS.
Thanks!

Normally that is correct. But John has implemented a type of "active" or personalized way to upload your own CS sheets. Might I add, when you learn the CLASSes, it is exprememly powerfull and very customizable. then you can share or trade your CS sheets with others. I like that aspect. john catering to us tech suavy folks!

.fr_comment .fr_header A:visited {color: #000000; font: bold 10pt/12pt; text-decoration: underline}
.fr_page
{
font: 14pt;
}
.fr_page A:link {color: #000099; text-decoration: none}
.fr_page A:visited {color: #000099; text-decoration: none}
.fr_hi
{
BACKGROUND-COLOR: #eeee00;
}
This would be a good default css, for all of the people who haven't designated one.
It's as close to the original look of FR as I've been able to get.
One problem with using custom csses is that if you don't have a default, the lurkers will all see only very ugly-looking threads. That will DEFINITELY drive people away from FR.
