Another time in our Nation's past, also faced with great uncertainty, was written the following song. Although this was written during the war between the states, it still brings me comfort to this day, as stated in II Corinthians 5:16..."the inward man/woman is renewed day by day."
NEARER, MY GOD, TO THEE by Lowell Mason
Nearer, my God, to Thee, nearer to Thee! E'en though it be a cross that raiseth me;
Still all my song would be nearer, my God, to Thee, Nearer, my God, to Thee, nearer to Thee!
Though like the wanderer, the sun gone down, Darkness be over me, my rest a stone;
Yet in my dreams I'd be nearer, my God, to Thee Nearer, my God, to Thee, nearer to Thee!
There let the way appear steps unto heav'n; All that Thou sendest me in mercy giv'n;
Angels to beckon me nearer, my God, to Thee Nearer, my God, to Thee, nearer to Thee!
The with my waking thoughts bright with Thy praise, Out of my stony griefs Bethel I'll raise;
So by my woes to be nearer, my God, to Thee, Nearer, my God, to Thee, nearer to Thee!
Or if on joyful wing, cleaving the sky, Sun, moon, and stars forgot, upwards I fly,
Still all my song shall be, nearer, my God, to Thee, Nearer, my God, to Thee, nearer to Thee!
"God is bigger than the boogie man, he's bigger than godzilla or the monsters on TV."
That made me feel better than just about anything i could think of.
"The Battle is the LORD'S"
1. Angels from the realms of glory, Wing your flight o'er all the earth; Ye who sang creation's story, Now proclaim Messiah's birth: Come and worship, Come and worship; Worship Christ, the new-born King.
2. Shepherds in the fields abiding, Watching o'er your flocks by night, God with man is now residing, Yonder shines the Infant Light: Come and worship: Come and worship, Worship Christ, the new-born King.
3. Sages, leave your contemplations; Brighter visions beam afar; Seek the great Desire of nations, Ye have seen His natal star: Come and worship, Come and worship; Worship Christ, the new-born King.
4. Saints, before the altar bending, Watching long in hope and fear, Suddenly the Lord, descending, In His Temple shall appear: Come and worship, Come and worship; Worship Christ, the new-born King.
When you walk through a storm hold your head up high
And don't be afraid of the dark.
At the end of a storm is a golden sky
And the sweet silver song of a lark.
Walk on through the wind,
Walk on through the rain,
Tho' your dreams be tossed and blown.
Walk on, walk on with hope in your heart
And you'll Never Walk Alone,
You'll Never Walk Alone.
Elvis did a beautiful version of this song.
And can it be that I should gain
An in-terest in the Sav-ior's blood?
Died He for me, who caused His pain?
For me, who Him to death pur-sued?
A-maz-ing love! how can it be
That Thou, my God, shouldst die for me?
A-maz-ing love! how can it be
That Thou, my God, shouldst die for me!
He left His Fa-ther's throne a-bove,
So free, so in-fin-ite His grace!
Emp-tied Him-self of all but love,
And bled for all His cho-sen race!
'Tis mer-cy all, im-mense and free,
For, O my God, it found out me.
A-maz-ing love! how can it be
That Thou, my God, shouldst die for me!
Long my im-pris-oned spir-it lay
Fast bound in sin and na-ture's night.
Thine eye dif-fused a quick-ening ray;
I woke-- the dun-geon flamed with light!
My chains fell off, my heart was free,
I rose, went forth, and fol-lowed Thee.
A-maz-ing love! how can it be
That Thou, my God, shouldst die for me!
No con-dem-na-tion now I dread:
Je-sus, and all in Him, is mine!
A-live in Him, my liv-ing Head,
And clothed in right-eous-ness di-vine,
Bold I ap-proach th'eter-nal throne,
And claim the crown, through Christ my own.
A-maz-ing love! how can it be
That Thou, my God, shouldst die for me!

O God, our help in ages past,
our hope for years to come,
our shelter from the stormy blast,
and our eternal home:
Under the shadow of thy throne,
thy saints have dwelt secure;
sufficient is thine arm alone,
and our defense is sure.
Before the hills in order stood,
or earth received her frame,
from everlasting thou art God,
to endless years the same.
A thousand ages in thy sight
are like an evening gone;
short as the watch that ends the night
before the rising sun.
Time, like an ever-rolling stream,
bears all its sons away;
they fly, forgotten, as a dream
dies at the opening day.
O God, our help in ages past,
our hope for years to come,
be thou our guide while troubles last,
and our eternal home!
Abide with me, 'tis eventide. The day is past and gone.
The shadows of the evening fall; The night is coming on.
Within my heart a welcome guest; Within my home abide.
Abide with me, 'tis eventide. Thy walk today with me.
Has made my heart within me burn, As I communed with thee.
Thy earnest words have filled my soul And kept me near thy side.
Abide with me; 'tis eventide, And lone will be the night.
If I cannot commune with thee, Nor find in thee my light.
The darkness of the world I fear, Would in my home abide.
[chorus]
O Savior, stay this night with me; Behold, 'tis eventide.
O Savior, stay this night with me; Behold, 'tis eventide.
Text: Lowrie M. Hofford; Music: Harrison Millard, 1830-1985; see Luke 24:29 (13-32)
Where can I turn for peace? Where is my solace?
When other sources cease to make me whole?
When with a wounded heart, anger, or malice
I draw myself apart, Searching my soul?
Where, when my aching grows, Where, when I languish,
Where, in my need to know, where can I run?
Where is the quiet hand to calm my anguish
Who, who can understand? He, only One.
He answers privately, Reaches my reaching.
In my Gethsemanie, Savior and Friend.
Gentle the peace He finds for my beseeching.
Constant He is and kind, Love without end.
Text: Emma Lou Thayne, 1973; Music: Joleen G. Meredith, 1973; See John 14:27, 16:33
----------- There are so many wonderful songs. On Eagles Wings is a favorite and is known to many as a warrior's hymn. When I find the words to that song, I'll post them.
May we all find peace in our hearts and homes. Thanks Varsity Flight for thinking of this. My mother had a very, very hard life, but found solace and courage in music -- especially hymns.
"How Firm a Foundation, Ye Saints of the Lord" by "Keen," 1787, alt.
How firm a foundation, ye saints of the Lord,
Is laid for your faith in His excellent Word!
What more can He say than to you He hath said
Who unto the Savior for refuge have fled?
In every condition, -- in sickness, in health,
In poverty's vale, or abounding in wealth,
At home and abroad, on the land, on the sea, --
The Lord, the Almighty, they strength e'er shall be.
"Fear not, I am with thee, oh, be not dismayed,
For I am thy God and will still give thee aid;
I'll strengthen thee, help thee, and cause thee to stand,
Upheld by My righteous, omnipotent hand.
"When through the deep waters I call thee to go,
The rivers of sorrow shall not overflow;
For I will be with thee thy troubles to bless
And sanctify to thee thy deepest distress.
"When through fiery trials thy pathway shall lie,
My grace, all-sufficient, shall be thy supply.
The flames shall not hurt thee; I only design
Thy dross to consume and thy gold to refine.
"E'en down to old age all My people shall prove
My sovereign, eternal, unchangeable love;
And when hoary hairs shall their temples adorn,
Like lambs they shall still in My bosom be borne.
"The soul that on Jesus hath leaned for repose
I will not, I will not, desert to his foes;
That soul, though all hell should endeavor to shake,
I'll never, no never, no never, forsake!"
