Yet another short-sighted, panicky move by a corporation. Let's see, how would you feel safer -- having your mail checked by employees you screened and hired, in a room you can monitor, or having it checked by an outside firm where you don't know who is working there, or what kind of procedures are in place?

Time Inc. spokesman Peter Costiglio said the move had nothing to do with the anthrax cases....
This doesn't pass the "laugh test."

Time Inc. spokesman Peter Costiglio said the move had nothing to do with the anthrax cases ...Ah yes. Reminds me of the White House briefings during the Klinton years... Those were the, well, something days...
Still, it's kind of strange. What could the reasons be? Just worried about getting sued? Could Time (and possible other East Coast companies) had a practice of hiring, um, questionable people for the mailroom and by firing _everyone_ they avoid any questions of racial profiling or some such thing?

It's not the mail room staff that's the problem.
Fire the editorial staff.

There goes the so-called "liberal" media again -- proving through their actions that what they really are is money-worshipping conservatives.

That is the patriotic spirit! Way to go Time, good example, great timing also!
Everybody rush out and buy some stock in AOL/Time, show them how much this move is appreciated.

Such heroes! (sneer) At a time when people are suffering enough, corporate America has to add to it. Lot's of other companys laying off too-and they shouldn't have any correlation with the tragic events! ie: Bell South. Why?

"Yeah the cost considerations of getting sued by anthraxed employees!"You have, as they say, hit the proverbial nail on the proverbial head. It is the insurance companies that are really behind this. Look for more of the same in weeks ahead. Makes me wonder, if someday soon we will all be "self imployed".

it's about TIME.

Stages of a major construction project which may be applicable to this situation. .
1.Enthusiasm
2.Disenchantment
3.Panic
4.Search for the guilty
5.Punishment of the innocent
6.Decorations for those who took no part.
This looks like a definite #5 for the mail room workers. -Tom

Time Inc. spokesman Peter Costiglio said the move had nothing to do with the anthrax cases . . . Ever notice how brazen professional liars tend to become? After practising their craft for years, they seem to believe that the whole world is populated with fools who will believe anything they say. This had everything to do with anthrax.

Could they have told them if it was planned way before this hmmmmmmmm
