Does anyone have any information on the bill in Congress that would order the re-demilitarization of former military equipment?

I know the measure passed the Senate but I need to find out what is going on with it in the House.

Thanks,

Mike

Mike, I thought I heard a couple of weeks ago that the House had passed it's own version of the bill, that the House version did not have the de-mil language, and that it was hence being referred to committee to resolve the two versions. Mike in MD

More details...

On Sept 25, the House passed HR-2586, `National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2002.' 2001. That bill does not contain Section 1062, the de-mil section.

On Oct 2, the Senate passed their version of that bill, S-1438. That version does contain Sect 1062 with the de-mil language.

On Oct 4, the Senate bill was received in the House.

On Oct 17: "The House struck all after the enacting clause [of S-1438] and inserted in lieu thereof the provisions of a similar measure H.R. 2586. Agreed to without objection." (Gotta love it.)

That was then sent back to the Senate, with a list of conferees.

The Senate immediately disagreed on the House ammendment, and and selected a list of Senate conferees.

So now, the House and Senate conferees have to duke it out over this and other differences. It would seem that we could apply quite a bit more leverage in this circumstance. Bartlett (R-MD) and Smith (R-NH) would be good targets for indicating distress over the contents of S-1438 Sec 1062.

The following contains the blow-by-blow status of the bill, including the list of conferees from both houses.

S1438 status

Mike, Thank you!!! That is the info I wanted.

I'll keep an eye on this bill closely. I refuse to demil anything I have.

And now we'll have the Office of Homeland Security so that when this passes in whatever form, they'll make sure your ol' guns and stuff are disposed of properly. Wouldn't want you being mistaken for some kind of terrorist or something...
