Another vote for the 12 ga. pump, since you're limiting yourself to one gun. Key factor is the variety of the available ammunition.

Yep... my 12 gauge pump action shotgun will do just fine. Even Norman Schwarzkopf kept one in his bunker during the Gulf War. If it's good enough for him, it's good enough for me.

Just curious, do you guys keep your shotguns loaded or unloaded? I keep mine unloaded with the ammo within arms reach. However, I am always afraid my wife would forget how to load it if an intruder were breaking down the door.
