Over the years I have become less and less tolerant of the gay lifestyle because they don't seem to be able to moderate their behavior as far as taking the simple steps needed to stop diseases such as AIDS. Although I disagree with their lifestyle in principle, there are some homosexuals who do seem to have higher moral standards than the rest. There is a writer, Andrew Sulliven, who I think I read in a guest column in 'National Review' and he is one of the few from that community who seem to value monogamy and be calling for a lifestyle with less promiscuity and higher morals. At least that small step is commendable.

I blame the liberal media for promoting the idea that people who lead gay lives can never become straight. There are known instances when people have thought they were gay, lead unhappy, unfulfilling lives, received religious counseling and are now living happy lives as straight people. There have been studies done on this. I have read materials on this (published medical journals); there is a correlation between a child either physically or emotionally being abandoned by their father and homosexuality (either male or female).

I have a file on some of this stuff in my garage. I'd have to dig it out. Of course, as I said earlier, most of my material dates to early 90's. Study results could possibly have changed by now to reflect the current P.C. stance in psychology.

One has to wonder whether the level of promiscuity in these 93 guys is typical -- it's notoriously difficult to gather indisputable data about how many partners a typical gay male has.

I think the author was extremely modest with his numbers. I've known alot of male homosexuals and most have had 30 to 100 partners a YEAR... depending on their relationship "status". The bath houses, parties, etc. could yield a dozen partners in one evening. How do they think the AIDS virus spread so quickly throughout the homosexual community (percentage-wise) as opposed to the heterosexual communities?

I don't have statistics... just personal observations of those I've worked with, cared for and some in my own family. It would find it hard to believe that only those "I" know... are super-promiscuous ....so it has to be a pretty common scenario. Now, pardon me while I go gag.

But how can this increase be a surprise to an physician who lives in SF?
People who base about 95% their lives on just their sexual lifestyle
will ALWAY experience disproportionate rises in sexually-transmitted diseases...
as soon as they think sex is less likely to kill them.

And officals say an America Online chat room for gay and bisexual men in San Francisco is partly to blame.

A 1999 study by the Department of Public Health linked seven cases to the AOL chat room, where men talk online, then sometimes meet for sex.

Last year, 10 cases were associated with the site. This year, 16 cases so far have been connected with the chat room, Klausner said.(Dr. Jeffrey Klausner, director for the city Department of Public Health)

Efforts by the city to get AOL to post warnings about syphilis spreading through men meeting for sex on the site have met with resistance, Klausner said.

Instead, AOL has offered health officials free membership to it's chat rooms, to send counselors into the virtual realm to post prevention messages.
