OSAMA bin Laden must be stopped before he launches a nuclear strike, Tony Blair warned yesterday. The Premier spoke as 200 Marine Commandos were put on stand-by for action in Afghanistan and Britain's Chief of the Defence Staff said the war on terrorism could last 50 years. Speaking on British Forces radio, Mr Blair said: "If these terrorists are allowed to carry on building up their network - possibly acquiring chemical, biological or even nuclear weapons of mass destruction - our world will be an unsafe place. "There will be no corner, particularly not a place like Britain, that will be untouched by that. "We have to close the network down. If we don't, there is no doubt it will commit even worse outrages." The Marines - from 40 Commando - will form part of a powerful force of 4,200 servicemen and women, Armed Forces minister Adam Ingram said yesterday. They will stay on alert in the Gulf aboard the assault ship HMS Fearless when other troops return from exercises in Oman. Another 400 Marines will remain in Britain in "high readiness". The aircraft carrier HMS Illustrious, a submarine with Tomahawk missiles, the destroyer HMS Southampton and frigate HMS Cornwall will also remain in the Gulf region. They will be backed by seven auxiliary ships and four Nimrod patrol and Hercules transport planes. Three submarines and 10 refuelling planes have already been committed. The Marines' commander, Brigadier Roger Lane, said they were viewing action with "anticipation and apprehension". But they may not be called on for weeks. They could provide "force protection" for SAS units sent into the country on search-and-destroy missions. |

Perhaps Bush will too.
The Premier spoke as 200 Marine Commandos were put on stand-by for action in Afghanistan and Britain's Chief of the Defence Staff said the war on terrorism could last 50 years.Well thank God for that - I thought I'd miss out on the festivities before I had a chance to get in theatre!
Ditto. I was no fan of Blair's in the past, but I've been exceedingly happy with his performance since 9/11.
Very soon, i hope, we don't seem to have the luxury of time that bush & ashcroft talk about....
I wonder if Mr. bin Laden is ready to play.....
Absolutely......only this time a demonstration of "refined" battlefield weapons.
As, Congressman Buyer said about 10 days ago.......paraphrased..."Pick a set of known terrorist caves and use a tacticle nuke to lift that mountain and then drop it on the terrorist ..burying them for a thousand years"
NO "hiroshima" shadows for the media to play with, no severe radiation for birth defects......just a honest demonstration of true power.
It's time and to be honest those in the cave will be vaporized before their mountain falls on them.......unlike those innocents of all nations and ages that sat , watched and then in a moment and perhaps hours of fear saw their own death ; crushed and then creamated alive.
A demonstration of power is just what we need.
The point is that while everyone is trying to stop bin Laden over there...
Why has not the president or his designate done anything to stop the most likely disaster from terrorists already here?
Why has Holloween not been called off?
Why must we walk right into terrorists hands so they can destroy or children and our economy?
And why aren't the people on this site doing a full analysis of the threat beyond a half a dozen articles.
Threats of nuclear war are not going to stop these people. They can do more damage to us with biological warfare.
We need to do more now immediately and not rely on George Bush or Tony Blair. It is our responsibility to protect ourselves and our children. People get hip!!
So when are you people on this site going to take the responsibility to discuss the relationship between Arabs, Candy purchases, video taping by the people in Costco stores and the proximity to Sterling, Virginia anthrax infections
