Ummmm...I hate to rain on your parade but this whole confederate flag thing in the south has been and still is a class issue. All southerners don't fly confederate flags; in deed, many of them think such demonstrations are quite silly. I was born and raised in Atlanta and I am amazed at how some of these stereotypes develop; and how class-based this kind of behavior is. Oh, and yes, I have relatives in rural Georgia. Same story - it's not an Atlanta thing. This behavior has nothing to do with being 'southern'. My mother (yes, we're white folks) supported the civil rights movement back in the fifties and sixties and she says it was the same then, too. Not all southerners were racist, but boy did the media love to find the ones (or should I say, the trash) that were!

I don't think that's true, and I don't doubt that many who fly the Stars and Bars are intelligent, and do so with liberty and equality as guiding principles.

The problem that I see is that this emblem arose from one of the great moral struggles of its day, in which Southerners were on the wrong side. Better to have fewer rights delegated to states, and no slaves.

Atlanta ain't really in the south anymore. It hasn't been the same since Sherman burned it, and Ted Turner moved in. Then... after Lewis Grizzard died, it just finished going to hell. Nope, they don't speak for me there.

That's riduculous. Pride in Southern Heritage crosses all class boundries. You can see Confederate flags on every vehicle from rusted out pickups to five figure SUV's, and from small houses to large multi-story mansions. It's not a "class" thing, it's a way of life.
