Nuke em! Nuke em Now!

The Nuclear attack against the Empire of Japan, August 6th and 9th, 1945, as horrible as it was, ended World War II and probably saved hundreds of thousands of American lives.
Japan, with its suicide bombers, radical religion, and brutal aggression against its neighbors, would emerge from the rubble and become a model of peace and industry.
While the suffering of the innocent Japanese victims of the atomic bomb is awful to contemplate, the Japanese people were spared the greater suffering and loss of life that would have undoubtedly accompanied a full-scale invasion of the home island.
Hindsight would reluctantly conclude that the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki was necessary to end the war swiftly.

The greatest generation, to coin a phrase from Tom Brokaw’s celebrated book of the same name, was great by virtue of a highly defined understanding of such concepts as right and wrong, duty, and honor.
The World War II generation had a keen awareness that freedom and liberty didn’t grow on trees but had to be earned and, if necessary, defended.
They confronted an enemy driven by a vision of world control and proven willing to employ any means at its disposal, however brutal, to achieve their goal.
Human life, to the Imperial Japanese and German Nazis, was of little consequence.

Our nation, and, indeed, western civilization, confronts such an enemy today.
The radical Muslims have proven that they are also driven by this vision of world conquest.
They feel commanded to subjugate the world to what they believe is the one true faith.
With the same sense of over-arching righteousness, they believe that they have a right to achieve their goal by employing any means necessary.
This is why they can crush the twin towers killing thousands of people, machine gun a Christian church filled with worshippers in Pakistan, or throw hand grenades at a kindergarten in Maalot, Israel while shrieking God is Great at the top of their lungs.
Bin Laden succinctly summarized the situation in one of his propaganda films when he stated that America loves life while he, and his followers, love death.

Do the American citizens have any doubt regarding the intentions of this enemy?
They’ve hit us right in the solar plexus with our own planes, killing all aboard including themselves, and laying waste to the very heart of our most important city.
They bombed our Pentagon with one of our own planes.
Portions of our Congress, Supreme Court, State Department, Postal Buildings and major media centers are not presently inhabitable as a result of anthrax.
Our Attorney General tells us to be prepared for more murderous attacks.
We are afraid to step out of our doors.

Saddam Hussein is feverishly developing nuclear, chemical, and biological weapons to use against us.
Besides Afghanistan, the radicals largely control Syria, Libya, Sudan, Yemen, Algeria, the Palestinian Authority, and elsewhere.
Radical Islam is capturing greater segments of the moderate Muslim population in every corner of the world including, most likely, America.
The tentacles of Al Quada, backed by billions of dollars, are growing wherever Islam exists.
It has been reported that agents of Bin Laden’s Al Quada attempted to buy nuclear bomb making material from Pakistani scientists.

Since the Iranian hostage crisis of 1979, America has appeased the radicals in a manner reminiscent of British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain’s appeasement of the Nazis in the 1930’s.
As a result, Americans have been killed in increasing numbers including the mass murders resulting from the bombing of Pan Am 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland, the American Embassy bombings in Nariobi and Dar es Salaam, the bombing of the Khobar Tower in Dahran, the bombing of the USS Cole in Aden, and other incidents too numerous to list in this short column.

Today, the barbarians are at the gate and we are cowering behind the turrets.
This must stop if we expect to continue living with some semblance of freedom and normalcy.
It should be obvious by now that closing our eyes and wishing away the nightmare won’t cut it.
God willing, our innocent people won’t have to suffer yet another mass murder before our government and people wake up from the long state of somnambulance.
Is there any doubt, at this point, that the enemy plans to annihilate us and is actively seeking the means to do so?
What it comes down to is that it’s going to be either us or them.

Please explain what strategic purpose of the United States would be served by a strategy of "Nuke em! Nuke em Now!"

How many weapons? What targeting schema? What metric of effectiveness? When do we declare victory? How do we handle an enemy whose need for urban areas is much less than our own?

How would nuking stop ALL of them? Now, poisoning them would be much more effective and have much less an impact on the global environment. Hell, why don't we just round 'em all up and ship 'em on boxcars to the gas chambers. Would we include the Red Chinese? The Shining Path? The IRA? The Aryan Nation? Milosevich, the apartheid conspirators of South Africa? Nuking them in 1945 made sense, in 2001 it is a sign many of us have lost our senses.

Nuke what, exactly? A bunch of camels and the sand they're standing on? Just what does Afghanistan have in one known place that is worthy of nukes?

What I think people who call for nukes really want is to just nuke the whole region. Well, that's sure not the way to win friends and influence people among the rest of the world. Or perhaps we should just nuke the rest of the world, too?

Could wind up being mighty lonely on this rock if things get out of hand. Mighty hot, too. Ever think of that?

Does a Neutron bomb make a mushroom cloud? Any experts hereabouts who can answer that one?

Fuel air bombs create mushroom cloud and are extremely effective even in for trenches and caves...all oxygen is immediately consumed when exploded...had a devasting affect on Iraqi soldiers buried in bunkers in Gulf War.

Here's the idea...

Light up Afghanistan so it burns for 1,000 years.

Explain to the world that the next state-sponsored terrorist attack against any American citizen anywhere on Earth will result in the immediate lighting of that country such that, it too, will burn for 1,000 years.

Any individual terrorist attack will result in the terrorist's associates and immediate family being summarily executed. This would have the effect of somewhat tempering the enthusiasm that his friends, wife and family might otherwise exhibit for his 'heroic' deeds. It would in all likelihood end terrorism for all time.

Question for you:

What part of the above do you not understand?

I agree with the author. This elevator is going all the way to the bottom. The rubicon of biological warfare has been crossed. This conflict will not end until the Islamic world has been on the receiving end of American nuclear weapons, IMO. The first and, one hopes, last target should be Saddam Hussein: all his palaces, bunkers, C&C, and inventories of chemical and biological weapons. At least nobody will miss him. Regrettably, thanks to the fecklessness of the Clinton administration, it seems likely that he will make us pay a terrible price for taking him out, but I see no acceptable alternative.

Eventually I am afraid it will come to this. Eventually somebody is gonna ignite a pocket nuke in NYC or Washington, D.C., or spread smallpox throughout America and Europe.

Then all of your questions will not matter.

For starters, the capitol cities of all the terrorist states, such as Riyadh, Tripoli, Islamabad, Cairo, Aden, et al. Next, important Islamic sites, such as Mecca.

That would be a start, and from here it looks like it will happen eventually, so let's get it over with.
