Don't Be Like Mike
Salon ^ | 10/5/2001 | Tom Schaller

Posted on 11/05/2001 6:59:23 AM PST by Sanjuro68

Excerpt:

Corporate shill: According to Fortune magazine, Jordan's endorsements constitute the greatest assemblage of sports sponsorships ever. But Jordan has shown little concern about the social implications of his sponsorships. He hardly batted an eye at the accusations of wage, labor and health abuses by Jordan-sponsor Nike in its treatment of employees in Southeast Asia.

Political and race compromiser: Former Charlotte, N.C., mayor Harvey Gantt, an African-American, twice ran and lost U.S. Senate challenges to unseat Jesse Helms. When approached by Gantt's campaign for an endorsement, Jordan replied dismissively, "Republicans buy sneakers, too."

People still read Salon?

I was one of the early readers of Salon along with about 10 other intrepid conservatives who regularly did battle in Table Talk with the patelar liberals who resided there. I don't read it anymore except to occasionally visit to read Horowitz take them to task over something. Post-clinton, it's influence has declined along with it's stock price.

I only run in Nikes -- for whatever reason, their shoes and my feet seem to match perfectly, though their quality control seems to be slipping: my last three pairs have been sizes 9, 9.5, and 10.5.

Maybe your feet are growing!

I believe if Steve had lived, he would have given Steve Knight a political wedgie over how his company changed over the year to one who expoited foriegn workers unmercifully.

These workers' choices are to toil from dawn to dark in a dysentery-infested rice paddy; become a slave laborer pouring asphalt in some Middle East sheikdom; or sell their children to a prostitution-pornography ring with the hope that at least their children will be fed.

The Third World is not peopled by mindless automatons requiring the benevolent wisdom of superior Westerners to watch out for their interests. They work for Nike because it is their highest and best alternative.

Steve Knight? Know your enemy, bud. His name is Phil. As for looking ridiculous in Nike wear, I'd guess you look spectacular in Goodwill castoffs.
