Gun permits through the roof

SALT LAKE CITY -- Applications to carry concealed weapons are on the rise in Utah and around the country.

"We are seeing quite a big increase," said Nannette Rolfe, director of the Utah Bureau of Criminal Identification.

Applications to carry concealed weapons in October 2001 jumped 61 percent compared to the previous October, Rolfe said. A total of 664 permits were issued last month.

Before a person can submit an application for a concealed weapons permit, they must take a gun safety course, obtain two letters of reference and be fingerprinted, Rolfe said.

Two weeks after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks Rolfe said her office was flooded with concealed-weapons applications.

"We do see an increase at specific times when things are happening throughout the world or within our nation," she said.

This seems to be a nationwide phenomenon. I've seen articles already about increased demand for permits in TX and CO. Let's hope that we can capitalize on this groundswell of support for CCW to relegate the gun control movement to the crackpot fringe.

The authors (the "Standard-Examiner staff and wire services") need a refresher course on grammar.

Right on, I have been seeing stories from other locales that say the same thing that this story does: Gun purchases and applications for CCW permits have been going way up.

The myth that we are all safer if we are helpless is getting blown to hell. The Sept. 11th attacks shattered the liberal preachings that we are safe if we buy people's friendships, allow ourselves to be bullied by the Muslim countries & U.N., and have only a token homeland defense. People have applied these lessons learned to their personal lives. More and more people are realizing that they are not safer on the street and in their homes if they are meek, timid, and unarmed.

The myth the Sept. 11 attacks shattered is that the government has the ability and will to protect the middle-class American from crime - and the middle class is now reacting like people who realize that "their" government cares about protecting only the grandees and has the ability to protect only the grandees can be expected to react.

But - in fairness - signs of this realization go back a decade; how else did the U.S. middle class come to support a rich industry of "remote-monitored" alarm companies, sophisticated car alarms, etc.? Sept. 11 was just the last straw ending the cognitive dissonance of the sheeple.

The historical result of an increase of law abiding John Q. Citizen concealed carry permits being issued is a reduction in violent crime and related injurys/deaths. These legally carried weapons are very rarely (almost never) used in an unlawful manner. The more citizens are exposed to the "more guns equals more safety and less crime" truth, the better.

Yep. How many CCW permit holders have ever used their gun in a crime and had their permit taken away? I don't know exactly but I think it's less than 10. Anybody have a statistic? Talk to me. The percentage is like a millionth of 1%.

It's obvious that the anti-gun people are not interested in safety like they claim. If they were, they would be lobbying for tighter drivers license tests and regulations. A lot more people die from car accidents than those that die from firearms accidents and murders combined. If they were really interested in safety, they would be trying to keep bicycles away from kids. Statistically, a kid on a bike is at much greater risk than being shot, purposely or accidentally.
