Dressing as a pirate is not an in-your-face expression of racism. Dressing as a Klansman is.

Let me add one other thing. I just looked at the pictures of those idiot frat boys dressed in blackface and in Klan outfits. Their costumes weren't all in good fun -- they were meant to be offensive and racist, and they definitely were. And these students were so proud of the obnoxiousness of their attire that they stood there smiling for the photographer!
