U.S. Will Not Appeal Coastal Coho Delisting

U.S. WILL NOT APPEAL COASTAL COHO DELISTING

JONATHAN BRINCKMAN - The Oregonian

The National Marine Fisheries Service will not appeal a federal judge's ruling that removed Oregon coastal coho from the endangered species list.

Instead, agency officials said Friday that they will review 23 salmon and steelhead listings across the West Coast to see whether other fish should be stripped of federal protection, while launching a new review of the role of hatchery fish in salmon recovery. They also will review the coastal coho delisting.

... some salmon could lose federal protection if the fisheries service concludes that numerous hatchery fish should be counted the same as wild fish.... Even with the outcome uncertain, Endangered Species Act opponents were thrilled by Friday's action. In the case they won before U.S. District Court Judge Michael Hogan of Eugene, property owners and others argued that Oregon coastal coho should be removed from the endangered species list because hatchery coho are common.

"It's a great decision," said Russ Brooks, an attorney with the Pacific Legal Foundation (www.pacificlegal.org), which represented the Alsea Valley Alliance before Hogan. "It's the thing we were after: To have the fisheries service go back and re-evaluate their policies and all the listings." Conservationists reacted angrily, saying they fear that protection of wild salmon and steelhead is now in jeopardy. ...

Fish protection nuts don't dare appeal, for fear of a wider ruling by a higher court. They do not want actual facts made public. Facts such as there is absolutely no difference between hatchery and "wild" fish.

Have you hugged your tree today? Come on folks there is a reason to protect certain species, Just think if the Eagle had died off I wouldn't be able to share that with my kids. Fishing is the same, we have over fished and dammed up so many water ways that its amazing that the salmon are even around.

"and dammed up so many water ways"

It is so disheartening to see even one Freeper engaging is such "Dam Delusions!" I say this, not to be harsh, or abrupt, but I sincerely hope you'll reconsider your perception of "conventional wisdom" and learn the truth.

A good start would be to acquire some valid "un-conventional truth" here and follow all the way through the book to the end for re-enlightenment.

You could find that the founders DID forsee constitutional ways to protect this fabulous nations natural resources for your kids in a much better way than is being done!!!

The Judge certainly is justified in seeing it that way and so should you.

The "reason" is not served by the Act. If you want to know more about how the federal and California state Endangered Species Acts are destroying rural communities and preparing them either as unmanaged federal wildland preserves by "cleansing" them of farmers, ranchers, loggers and miners or as developed retirement communities by taking the water resources that enable them to grow crops -visit this site: http://www.snowcrest.net/siskfarm/klamlinks.html

From ordie's page:
I believe that this country will always be free,
but we need to keep the pressure on our goverment
and elected officials to ensure this is so.

Perhaps he's not aware of what has been done
to the Klamath Basin folks (and others).
Training takes time.

Kind of like a cross between California Condor and Spotted Owl.

Have you hugged your tree today? I don't think hugging a tree will help keep it alive. Scientific FACTS, methods...will. You don't seem to realize the RURAL CLEANSING that is going on. For example, on my parent's land (here in Washington State) and in the May Valley (Here in WA ST) owners of land on streams ARE NOT ALLOWED TO MOVE ROCKS AROUND WITHOUT PERMISSION. The envir-nazis who had taken over were supposed to keep the streams in good condition. (Something the owners used to do themselves.) However, in May Valley the envir-nazis decised that meant that NO rocks or build up could be removed. Thus, the streams flooded the owners' land, threatened houses, the stream didn't run freely, and fish were endangered. THEN when the owners started to clear out some of the debris they were in trouble with THE LAW! (shudder shudder)

A letter has actually been found in which the envir-nazi's were scheming to keep up the flooding so land would go DOWN in price and they (enviro-nazi orgs)could buy it up for cheap prices and "take control" and "take care of the streams."

Liberal extremism in environmental matters is as INSANE as it is in politics! Don't forget it.

I have recent photos that I took while living in Valdez (a major spawning area for pinks, cohos, chums, and even Kings). These photos show the water BLACK with swimming salmon. There is not only no shortage of any of these fish, but there is NO--REPEAT, NO GENETIC DIFFERENCE between hatchery-raised fish and wild. The only difference is that the spawning runs are MUCH larger than they would have been had the fish been left to their own devices.

Keep one thing in mind with these Pacific salmon: They are swimming home to spawn and DIE. That's what they do. The do not return to the ocean for another whack at life. They come to the spawning grounds, they spawn, then they die. Period. If we catch them before they spawn, we eat them. But they are there to die, and have already begun the process.

or that there is no difference between the coho in OK and the coho in OR...unless the Alabama white tail is endangered and the Georgia white tail is not.

My wife picked up some coho at 'Trader Joe's' yesterday for tonights dinner guests.....

YAAAAHOOOOO!

This is the best news to come out in years. Hopefully the State is paying attention to this and reconsiders listing coho under the State ESA. (I can dream can't I?)

But what about the poor endangered small pox virus? It has been completely removed from the wild by evil man and now survives only in captivity.

Sorry. Some species are more worthy of protection than others. The goal of all environmental laws should be to improve the environment for people to live in. The tree-hugging, radical environmentalists can't seem to make that distinction.

The fish protection folks who want to maintain some artificial distinction between "wild" salmon of a specific species and the "hatchery" salmon of the exact same species are either believers in "Lysenkoism", or they are totally devoid of any understanding of modern genetics.

I somehow suspect it is a bit of both.
