Since September 11, 2001, many articles and reports have appeared in the Arabic press claiming Muslim proselytizing ("Da'wa") in the U.S. has seen an upsurge in Americans' converting. These reports claim messages of tolerance promoted by the U.S. government and local authorities has induced many to convert to Islam.

Immediately after the September 11 attacks, Sheikh Raid Sallah, the head of the Islamic movement in Israel, called on U.S. President George Bush to convert to Islam and thus solve all problems. Recently, Sheikh Sallah reiterated his call at a rally in the Arab town of Tamra (the Galilee): "Oh, peoples of the West... We say to you: We are the masters of the world and we are the repository of all good [in the world], because we are the 'the best people, delivered for mankind' [Koran, 3:111]. We do not hesitate, Oh Bush and Blair; we invite you to Islam, enter Islam, you and your peoples."(1)

Muslim American reports in the Arab press indicate that Muslim proselytizing efforts have been unusually successful since the September 11 attacks. 'Alaa Bayumi, Director of Arab Affairs at the Council for American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), wrote in the London daily Al-Hayat that "non-Muslim Americans are now interested in getting to know Islam. There are a number of signs...: Libraries have run out of books on Islam and the Middle East... English translations of the Koran head the American best-seller list... The Americans are showing increasing willingness to convert to Islam since September 11... Thousands of non-Muslim Americans have responded to invitations to visit mosques, resembling the waves of the sea [crashing on the shore] one after another... All this is happening in a political atmosphere that, at least verbally, encourages non-Muslim Americans' openness towards Muslims in America and in the Islamic world, as the American president has said many times in his speeches..."(2)

I think I saw a post on FreeRepublic.com a month or two ago... about the "wave" of conversions since 9/11. That poster likened this alleged groundswell of conversions to Islam to the dozen or so women who "fell in love" with cannibalistic serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer...a homosexual.

In a country of almost 300 million people, a few oddballs will figure into any mix....

Next year these Islamic "converts" will turn to Buddhism....then become atheists....then Amish...then Jedi warriors...

I would prefer that Mr. Bush continue as he is with respect to worship preferences. However, if his predecessor, Mr. Clinton, would convert to Mohammedanism that would be fine with me-- especially if he would therefore put a bag or tent over the head of Mrs. Clinton, kick and cane her occasionally, perhaps take Monica as a second wife and do the same, and while he's at it, put something over Chelsea's head.

I don't think there is much real conversion. Mostly, they are spinning the PC praise of Islam and sale of books on Islam here as a sign that the attacks were successful and furthered the cause of Allah. They choose not to get it.

I recall a post about a woman who saw the 9/11 atrocities and just felt impelled to become a moslem.

Like the Stockholm Syndrome, it is form of identification with the aggressor. Characteristic of Borderline Personality Disorder, a lack of core identity and a void where most people have a self.

Same folks who deal with rejection by slashing their wrists and saying "There...now do you love me?"
