I was one of those who got out the Koran and a history of the founding of Islam. Scary stuff, although the history portrayed Mohammed in a sympathetic light, and the Koran was translated and annotated by a Muslim who loved the beneficial and peaceful aspects and downplayed the rest. No convert I. Just more convinced that Mohammed was a false self-serving prophet (he seemed to have a lot of convenient revelations in response to his personal concerns.) It seems to me that what good there is in Islam is in no way original to it, but came from Judaism and Christianity.

Oh don't worry, these thugs are a bunch of spin-meister raqueteers. There aren't a bunch of Americans converting to Islam, if they are they are just foolish. Keep in mind the media tries to scare everyone with the 1 billion muslim crap. There are more than 1 billion Christians, plus nearly a billion hindus, and nearly a billion buddhists (I could be off on the numbers). So by no means do Muslims control the world population, it is a bunch of crap.

If I start my own religion and I gain one convert, then I can say my religion grew by 50% in one year.

Only 2% of the population of the US is Muslim. Of those, the overwhelming majority are black native born citizens, not immigrants. Quite a few of them (I think it's around 30%) belong to groups like Nation of Islam, which is considered "heretical" by "true" Muslims anyway. The majority of converts to Islam remain black ; those that are white or Hispanic are mostly spouses or lovers of a Muslim.

The rate of conversion to Islam after the attacks is said to have risen fourfold in some large cities. Most of those converts are black. I suspect that the conversion was caused less by attraction to Islam than hatred of America and Americans, by the same sort of person who feels entitled to reparations, thinks Bush 'stole' the election, etc etc ad nauseum ad infinitum.

Given that 12% of the population is black, it appears that Islam isn't all that attractive to most of them in the first place.

The things that the author points to as proof of a wave of Islam (sales of the Koran, eg) are as equally likely to be caused by the desire to "Know one's enemy".

Finally, bear in mind that Muslims are explicitly allowed to lie in order to aid islam. Even the fourfold figure, from an article posted to FR back at the end of Sept, may be either an exaggeration or an outright lie.
