Sarah Brady has lung cancer and remains addicted to cigarettes
NBC News ^ | November 27, 2001 | Tom Brokaw

NBC News is reporting that Sarah Brady has lung cancer because of her addiction to cigarettes. She earlier switched to low tar cigarettes on the theory they would be "healthier" but got lung cancer anyway.

A 5 day waiting period on cigarettes and this never would have happened.

Seriously...as much as I can't stand her, this is something I wouldn't wish on anyone (except Osama). Did they say it was fatal or was it discovered in time?

I'll bet real money that she becomes an "anti-smoking activist" before Christmas. Any takers?

Don't anybody gloat. Don't do it. She is politically totally 100% wrong, but lets draw the line there.

'kay?

I mean, I personally am so tempted, but if *I* can control it......then YOU can.....

Perhaps she shouldn't have been so adamant about banning those "flash suppressors" that we wanted to put on cigarettes. One less commie.

I'm sorry, but I have no sympathy for her whatsoever. I say this as a gun owner and a smoker.

I have known three people who died of lung cancer, two of them were long-term smokers and the third was addicted to watermelons; I didn't take pleasure in their passing away and I don't think that this is a topic for derision.

Those smoking bullets will take a person out, but they are more slow than the real thing. A lingering death of lung cancer is a bad way to go.

Could it have happened to a nicer person?

My mom died from emphysema and was totally addicted to smoking. Near the end, walking around pulling a little portable oxygen tank, she said she'd rather smoke than breathe.

Funny, both my parents smoked like chimneys most of their lives and I've never smoked a day in my life except for a few of those "funny" cigarettes when I was trying to talk some girl out of her pants.

I'm not a big anti-smoking fanatic though, I don't like telling people what to do or how to live. I don't want people smoking on planes or next to me in a restaurant or in the movies, but that's about it. I hate self-righteous busy body fascists. Freedom is the most important thing in the world to me.

Uh, Sarah Brady parlayed her husband's being shot into fame and (one can only suspect) fortune as an "anti-gun activist".

Watermelons? Is that a non-sequitor or did I miss something?

I am above gloating but it should not go unmentioned that the woman has blood on her hands. How many people have fallen prey to armed thugs, unable to defend themselves thanks in part to the laws she helped pass. This woman is no friend of America. I will not mourn her demise.

She HAS lung cancer already so where is the incentive to quit? The cancer isn't going away if she quits smoking. I have always heard that 'cancer cures smoking' but that is only in the final stages.

Just great. Now she will start a combined law suit against all states because she wanted to use a gun to end her life because she was dying of secondhand smoke caused by her smoking and rebreathing her own smoke, but she had a Brady waiting period and could not do it so she had to suffer.......or am I missing something.

Annual death rate comparison by cause.

If Sarah Brady were honestly trying to reduce deaths in America, she would leave guns alone and go after smokers - forming The Brady Campaign to Reduce Smoking Casualties or something.

That she does not indicates that she is a hypocrite. It also indicates she doesn't care about deaths themselves - and therefore that she is going after guns and gun owners for a different reason other than death rates.

Now, class, why do you suppose this is?

This is sad news. Mrs. Brady has had a tragic life. Married to a brilliant man who had half his brain blown away. She remains loyal to her marriage vows. She stayed with him, a semi-invalid, through thick and through thin. She really and truly believes in the cause she advocates.

While I do not agree with her on gun control, I admire her for standing by her husband in good times and in bad, as the marriage vows proclaim.

I hope Sara gets excellent treatment for her cancer, and that the time she has left will be peaceful and serene.

Those smoking bullets will take a person out, but they are more slow than the real thing. A lingering death of lung cancer is a bad way to go.

Perhaps she was subconsciously attempting to commit suicide, but refused to use a gun because of the public relations blowback, and cigarettes seemed like the next best weapon especially since her PR flacks could spin it as unintentional.

Just a possibility...

I didn't say he smoked watermelons. He was a young oncologist who worked at the V.A. hospital in L.A. and he loved watermelons; he neither smoked nor drank alcohol and was as surprised as his doctors were to discover he had inoperable lung cancer - nice guy, too.

Interesting question you pose. Seems like one would have to say either that smokers are idiots or that smoking is addictive. I believe it's the latter.
