I have had to be away from FR quite a lot lately because of other time commitments, a death in the family, and Thanksgiving. I was unaware that all this was going on. Please Jim, try to find a way to keep going. I learn so much here. I still read the newspaper, but I get my "news" here. I would be lost without this place!

And Jim, please... PLEASE, do not take this bastion of FReedom away. It took 5 years to get where it is now (and become as INFLUENTIAL as it is now!). It would take even longer to re-create. Do not let the few, hateful, jealous jerks out there get you down! Evil will always exist. It's how we deal with it that determines the quality of our lives.

Free Republic is the best site anywhere and I will gladly contribute. Wish it could be more - I'm a young but not rich retiree. Suggestion: how about directly asking for a sort of grant or donation from a wealthy conservative?

But if those who want it to be gone lose out in the debate, then I'd say they should just go away themselves, or, in the very least, shut up and quit whining about it.
Jim - I've followed FR for many years, several before I ever registered. I run a "BBS" site myself and find myself mentioned occasionally as "a sometimes poster on Free Republic" and a few other attempts at "insults" from others. I've run BBSes for about 20 years, since the old dial-up days, starting around 1982 or so - on Apple Computers. We had a relatively famous BBS in those days (called AppleVenture BBS) back in Washington DC, which DID include a lot of political discussion - along with a few famous names who visited us over time.
Throughout those years we were constantly hit with attacks (generally verbal) of one sort or another because we believed strongly in Reagan. Regardless, the BBS stayed "on the air" until late in 1993 (several years after moving to Colorado) when we took a lightning strike on the old Apple systems.
Needless to say, it took that to take us down, not a lawsuit, not whiners and complainers. We didn't "give up" because there were detractors. We didn't quit because we got tired. We continued to bring information, the TRUTH to the public even when threatened by a certain "government agency" for no apparent reason.
AppleVenture is long gone, as are 99.9% of the old dial up systems, but they were the forerunner to Free Republic.
If anything, FR should stay, remain online until "lightning strikes" - and never, ever, EVER give it up because of a few whining, ignorant detractors.
Free Republic IS a reflection of America, it IS a reflection of freedom. It IS what the First Amendment means to us all. It IS the epitomy of American Freedom.
