Your policy is reasonable when applied to organizations which claim to be giving funds or services to the needy, or other non-profits where you aren't getting any personal benefit from donating. However, since you're here and posting and saying you love this site, obviously you are getting something you value. If you go ahead and make a contribution to help continue the site, you're just paying for what you've already gotten. No way you can get cheated; the goods have already been delivered and you've already accepted and used them. Please pay.

I hope you keep the sight. I want you to. There are always going to be detractors in anything you do, especially dealing with the public. You have provided a wonderful forum and, speaking for myself, a wonderful place to learn things that otherwise may go unnoticed or unlearned. FR is the best archive of news, official and unoffical on the web, period. It is an excellent alternative entertainment option to the mindless TV wasteland. Some of the people here are stinkers, many are gems. I don't agree with some of what and who is banned, but it would have to ban alot more articles and people than it does though before I would consider it a fraud. The only thing that scares me here are some of the jingoists that have crept in since 9-11, their willingness to ignore the Constitution and rule of law, or twist it to their ends, to get the end they want is a little too naziesque for me.

Let me put in my 2 cents, I've been a constant reader and occasional poster to this board for, well today is my 4th anniversary. I was in DC for the famous impeachment rally, and I turn about 5 or 6 people on to this site a week, it seems. Free Republic fills a need, a very important one, and if it were to go away there might well be nothing to fill it.

That said, there has been a change in tone to FR in the last year or so, I call it the tinfoil craze. It used to be that this board was the only one where you could go to get the unedited raw data, as it were. Rumors, leaks, informed speculations - they formed the basis for wonderful discussions. But now the moment anyone reports anything that is out of the mainstream, there's that damn tinfoil. I do not think it is funny and I know of several new posters who quickly decided they would never post again when their first honest posting efforts were so ridiculed.

Where I am going with this is, I think FR has to survive, and this might be an opportunity to "reset" the board back to its roots. I say leave the board free, but only let paying members post. That satisfies the need to keep the information here freely accessible, while it might weed out the troublemakers as well as those who use this board as a daily chance to shoot people down.

Thats my view of it. One question I do have is whether consideration has been made to selling more advertising space on FR. Maybe I missed the memo on that one, but with this many hits, and a well defined demographic - heck, I'd advertise my company here if it was possible.

Those that feel there should be a monthly fee can always sign up for a monthy donation. Six of one half dozen of another.

Great point TBL. You see people, the second there is a required fee, or paying banner adds, this site goes off the non-profit status, and that would change the legal issues that this site faces big time. So for those that say they would be willing to pay a monthy fee, do it in donations.
