Radio Address by the President to the Nation

THE PRESIDENT: Good morning. This week, the official announcement came that our economy has been in recession since March. And unfortunately, to a lot of Americans, that news comes as no surprise. Many have lost jobs, or seen their hours cut. Many have seen friends or family laid off.

The long economic expansion that started 10 years ago, in 1991, began to slow last year. Many economists warned me when I took office that a recession was beginning. So we took quick action. We passed the biggest tax cut in a generation, and we imposed some much needed discipline on federal spending. And by the end of the summer, we could see signs that the economy was responding.

But the terrorist attacks of September the 11th hit our economy hard. They hurt our airlines and hotels and restaurants, and undermined consumer and business confidence. Now we need to act boldly to protect America's economic security. There are two immediate priorities for America's recovery. We must bring quick help to those who need it most, and we must restore our economy's growth.

It's the holiday season. It's a time to reach out to Americans who are hurting, to help them put food on the table and to keep a roof over their heads. I've offered a plan to provide immediate assistance to those who have lost their jobs in the wake of the terrorist attack. My plan extends unemployment compensation by 13 weeks in the states hardest hit by terrorism. My plan helps states offer Medicaid to uninsured workers in need, and their families. And my plan offers emergency grants to states to help displaced workers get job training and find new work, and continue their health insurance -- practical help in a difficult time.

And I'm working with congressional leaders on more ideas to help Americans who have lost their jobs. In the long run, the right answer to unemployment is to create more jobs. I have proposed a package of job-creating measures. I've asked Congress for tax relief for low-and moderate-income people to put more money into the hands of consumers, and to put people to work making things that consumers want. I have proposed we lower taxes on employers who buy new equipment to expand their business, and hire more people.

We should reform our tax laws so that employers don't pay more taxes as their profits shrink. And I propose we speed up the income tax cuts Congress passed in the spring, so that people can keep more of their own money to spend or pay their debts.

I asked for this job creation package on October the 5th. The House of Representatives responded swiftly. Yet I'm still waiting for a bill to sign. And, more importantly, so are more than 415,000 Americans who have lost their jobs since then.

You know, after September the 11th, my administration and the Congress made a conscious decision to show the terrorists we could work together. We had an obligation to show that democracy works. We've done that. And now we need to do it again by helping dislocated workers and spurring economic growth.

Thank you for listening.

END

Carville's plan is just plain stupid. ANYONE that's been following the stock market knows that the economy started taking a dump while Clinton was still in office. For the Democrats to start calling this the "Bush recession" is downright ignorant, and America can see right through it. And its going to backfire next November when a bunch of Congressional seats become availabe in states that Bush won.

Unfortunately, the President also has to wage a battle against the dems in Congress who want to blame him for the recession. Hopefully, enough people will remember that during the algore attempted coup, people were already losing money in the stock market. Our President has much on his plate to deal with. If only we could find a way to silence, neutralize, and get rid of Daschle, Gephardt, and Leahy--three evil doers and traitors to America.

Paragraph 2 says it all. The recession started last year, but the expansion began 10 years ago. LOL...buh-bye Clinton.

This is the part that matters. He's saying the trouble began last year, LOL, and the expansion started just before Clinton took office. Sounds right to me.

Yeah, I picked up on that, too. And it's all the truth. But the dems will spin it so they can take credit for everything good and blame the Republicans for everything bad. Everything, every time, forever. Once a crook, always a crook. And that's what the dems are: lying, thieving, crooks.

Note the reference to when the economic expansion started: 1991. When Bush's father was President, not Clinton.

He needs to do more than push for his economic stimulus in his radio address. Bush is very popular right now. The country is standing behind him. Nows that chance to "go over "Congress' heads" and "go straight to the people", like Reagna used to do successfully. I recommend a national prime time address to the nation on the economic aspects of the current wartime situation, and a call to flood the halls of Congress, especially the Senate and Daschle's office, with e-mails, phone calls, and letters. Show the democreeps in Congress for what they are: self-serving politicos. Pass the legislation!!!

The main problem is that those people getting the freebies don't want anyone in that is going to cut out their benefits. They have now reached the point that they are starting to outnumber the suppliers. These are the same people that don't know how to fill out a ballot.

Good speech. He got in ahead of the Democrat attack ads that are being manufactured right now. But since the news media are not on his side, he will have to keep pushing this. He has to seize the public mind before the Dems do on this issue, or the Republicans will suffer at the next election.

There are two immediate priorities for America's recovery.

Getting rid of:
1.Dashcle

I am glad he got it out there that the recession started before he took office. If Americans will recall, he was the one who was saying it was coming during the campaign, and when the economy started slowing down while the nameless one was still in office, he was ridiculed by the dems and the media for scaring people.
Certainly they were hoping to keep it quiet until he got in office so he could be blamed.

The Presidents popularity is soaring, therefore the dems have decided to attack the economy to undermine confidence in him.
Hopefully, after what we have been through, these things aren't as important to some Americans now, and this will backfire. Some learned there were more important things in life than the stock market as we watched the towers and the Pentagon burn, but I am sure the media and the RAts will do all they can to erase those feelings from the minds of citizens and do the "It's the economy, stupid" line again.
