$175 million sought for Klamath Basin
The Seattle Times ^ | December 3, 2001 | AP

PORTLAND — A draft proposal by U.S. Sen. Ron Wyden would set aside $175 million over five years as a long-term solution to help fix the Klamath Basin's water woes.

The Oregon Democrat said he is in touch with California's senators about trying to attach it to a major farm bill this week. The proposal was circulated privately last week to congressional offices and interest groups for comment.

According to a copy obtained by Newhouse News Service, the plan would create an interagency task force charged with developing, within six months, a comprehensive plan for agriculture and wildlife in the drought-ravaged basin.

The Klamath and other tribes would receive $30 million to aid species recovery, and $2 million would be earmarked for farmworkers who have been among the basin's economic casualties.

I'm not sure; the AP story is not very detailed. It looks like one of those deals with lots of taxpayer cash for the guys doing the study and the special interest groups, with some smaller amount allocated to pacify the trampled farm interests.

I don't know about the farmers and Klamath Basin residents, but me, if I was one of those groups, I just want my property rights. I would not want any government handout. I have my pride.

Let me see, they loose $200 million out of their economy each growing season. Over five years that's $1 billion dollars. Now this democrat thinks he'll make points by proposing $175 million over five years. Yep, that's about the level of economic understanding of the average socialist democrat.

Sometimes I get the feeling that the only thing they understand is that it's fun to spend other people's money.

Yes, and don't forget devising new laws to classify more of our citizens as criminals. That's always a good fall back when you're upset about not being able to spend money.

I saw the article this weekend and decided that it looked like bad news to me. As has already been pointed out, it is a wealth redistribution scheme that wastes money on groups that are causing the problem while offering the farmers a pittance in exchange for stealing their rights forever. I would rather keep my tax dollars and let the farmers keep their property rights while earning their own living doing what they love.

Ya know, this summer when we went up to K. Falls and help protest, the minute we stopped the Motor Home we spied a kitty hunting by the road in the tall grass.

"That's Socks C.!" I yelled to Mrs. Wasp, "that danged Phil V. leff him behind!"

From what I've gathered from the article.

$30 X 5 years= $150 million.

$2 X 5 years= $10 million

Leaving $15 million for, I guess, the Christmas party. Yeah I'd say the farmers are screwed. They'll spend the 2mil on recovery while the 30mil will be used by the enviros to steal more of their land and water.

In the words of Montgomery Burns, "Excellent."

I'll have to admit that now-a-days when I go thru a check-out counter at the soopermarket, I read the covers of those trashy rags that Socks C. posts in dark corners around these parts.

You got that right except for one small detail. The $175 million doesn't go to the farmer's. They get about $2 million. The Klamath Tribe gets $30 million. A new agency is formed to spend the rest managing our water for us.
