Tony Harvard Man would tell you that they were influenced by Hollywood.
There was Isaac, his son by his half sister Sara. Ishmael, his son by his handmaiden, Hagar and another half dozens sons by his wife Keturah. They populated the region.
The OT is just the history of the Israelites, written by them, for them about their relationship with God.
The Jews were in Jerusalem for over a 1000 years before Mohammed turned his Moon God into Allah.
This is just a little background. I don't realy care who was where when! That can get the whole world into trouble! The indians can kick us all out of the US, if that is the case; The Christians can kick all the Moslems out the mid-east since they were there first. The Italians would want to bomb Israel to capture the Holyland and restablish the Latin Kingdom..... Stop the insanity please!!
Our government and most western nations do not base their actions on religous basis anymore. We progressed enough to know that faith is a p[ersonal thing, and people should coexist regardless of their faith. That is the reason we don't see Christian, and Jews and budists, and Moslems killing each others in the USA. So why are these highly educated American people on the right wing, are all obssessed with the Israel/the bible/the promised land/the holy-moley land. Guys give it a rest!
Honest to goodness, there are Arabs propagandists out there, many of them promoted by the official media of various Arab countries, pretending that, prior to Victorian times or thereabouts, there was no Jewish presence in the Holy Land. That the cities now identified as Jerusalem, etc., are Not the locations described in the Bible, and that the events in the Bible happened "somewhere else" (they don't say where, but presumably it's not someplace that would be given over to Jews). This is their excuse for ethnic cleansing of Jews from every inch of Israel.
Maybe some of you wouldn't mind seeing the Jews driven out and replaced by Moslems throughout the Holy Land, but think about this: If there weren't Jews there in Biblical times, then the New Testament events didn't happen there either; Jesus didn't visit the Temple in the city we call Jerusalem, etc - that would also have had to happen "somewhere else". So after the Moslems drive out all the Jews and destroy all their shrines, they'll use the same argument to drive out the Christians.
