Actually...My name stems from two verbs that are used by myself and a group of friends...

"Johnny" means very good, or well done..."Hey man, that boat you referbished is JOHNNY!"

"Shear" means to move fast or take tight turns while having fun on any given motor craft..."Lets shear accross the lake and go to the bar". Or, "Man, I was shearing out there, I almost couldn't hold on"!

Please forgive the ignorance but...Doesn't it also "Cost Bandwidth" to post pics? In other words, isn't it cheaper for FreeRepublic to have text only posts rather than posts with pics?

Why is this a big deal?

This is a "big deal" because the owner of the website has it set up so all those threads you see are meant to be news articles that the forum can discuss.

Many people use FR as a one-stop news of the day archive. Some of those people have only a limited time to look at the site. So an endless string of "do I look fat in this" threads tends to drown out the important stuff.

And no, pictures are not stored on the FR server, they are only directed to by the post. So they don't clog up the works, other than making thread slow to download.

That's why there is a separate category for "vanities", except it's not called "Vanities", it's called "Your Opinions/Questions". Vanities are okay, just not when they're posted in any News category (because they're not news). That's so that people who JUST want news can screen out "Your Opinions/Questions" topics like "What's your Favorite Color?" and such.

I understand your point. Please understand that I am comming from the point of view of someone who has only posted on boards with headers and individual catagories. I've never seen a board like FreeRepublic except for maybe Usenet. And I assumed it's not as popular anymore because these Message Boards I speak of have made usenet obsolete, hasn't it?

It was an honest comment by me. Not intended as a flame or anything.

The catagories are a little confusing. And like I said, I've been coming here for a long time. but only posting for a few months.

And are "Vanities" really "OK"? I've noticed many of them being bashed...And am of the opinion that they are frowned apon on FreeRepublic. Maybe I'm mistaken. Maybe I've only seen them bashed when they are placed in the wrong area.

I didn't know that. I assumed for them to be able to be seen on any given site, that site had to also use "bandwidth" as I understand the word (Or, don't really understand it, depending on your point of view).

I only scanned the replies so if this was already posted forgive me. When upgrading your computer remember that memory is just as important as processor speed. And think DSL. Check with your local phone service to see if they offer it. You might be surprised to find that they do .

While funny...And it is funny...It doesn't really help in furthering my understanding of the situation when in a debate or conversation with some idiot liberal who says the Palestinians are being oppressed. Or, are just tryng to get back their "Stolen" land.

Currently, by best argument is to simply say..."Look in the bible, you will see the country of Isreal but not the country of Palestine. And if we're talking about ORIGINAL ownership, the Isrealies have a pretty good claim based on the fact that the bible is PRETTY OLD!"

You're not ignorant amigo. The only thing that goes through FR is my code which is saved on the FR server. When you click on the link the code I typed comes to your browser which then downloads the pictures from the server that my webpage lives on which is in ....... Iowa or somewhere. When those images come to your computer the bandwidth they use is through my webhosting company. Am I making sense? I've had a lot of coffee.

Actually..."Ignorant" is EXACTLY what I am. I'm one of the few (Probably one of the many here) that understand being ignorant is NOT a bad thing, per say...

So...When I steal pictures to paste on my personal message board or elsewhere (Something I learned to do not too long ago but STILL can't figure-out how to do on all boards, including this one), I am using SOMEONE ELSES bandwidth when people view that pic? COOL! I've GOT to start identifying Liberal Web Sites to start stealing pictures from!!!!

I have never had any doubt that Rather was lying when he made that story public. Nobody cares enough about Rather to beat him up except maybe his own boyfriend. The story was just too mundane and silly to be true.
