WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. intelligence reports indicate that the two most-wanted men in the American war on terrorism, al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden and Taliban leader Mullah Mohammad Omar, were still in Afghanistan, a U.S. official said on Saturday. Bin Laden was still believed to be in eastern Afghanistan, where relentless U.S. air strikes have pounded the Tora Bora region near Jalalabad to decimate al Qaeda forces hiding in mountain caves and tunnels, the official told Reuters on condition of anonymity.
While Mullah Omar was believed to be in Afghanistan it was unclear whether he was still in the southern city of Kandahar, which recently fell to anti-Taliban forces, or had slipped out, the official said.
The United States has waged a military campaign to destroy bin Laden and his al Qaeda network, blamed for the Sept. 11 attacks on New York and Washington that killed thousands of people, and the Taliban for sheltering him in Afghanistan.
U.S. Marines in Afghanistan focused on the hunt for bin Laden and other al Qaeda members. The United States has drawn up a list of about 30 senior members of al Qaeda, many believed to be in Afghanistan, the U.S. official said.
Marine Captain Stewart Upton told reporters at an air base in the southern Afghan desert near Kandahar that the Marines were carrying photographs of key al Qaeda members.
I have a prediction that before Christmas Osama will belong to the ages but I doubt that we have all those caves cleaned out until next spring. So chestnuts roasting on an open fire will bring B52 Carpet bombing to a cave near you. Merry christmas al Queda!
