More Than 1 Million Xbox Systems Shipped to North American Retailers In Just Three Weeks
C|NET ^ | 12/9/01

REDMOND, Wash., Dec. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Microsoft Corp. today announced that Microsoft(R) Xbox(TM) video game system has surpassed the 1 million mark in shipments, with 1.1 million units "sold-in" to retailers. These sell-in results build on the spectacular Xbox sell-through rate for the system's first two weeks of launch.

At the same time, Xbox games have been selling in record numbers. On average, gamers are purchasing several first- and third-party Xbox games every time they buy an Xbox. The most popular games to date include "Halo(TM)," "Project Gotham Racing(TM)" and "NFL(TM) Fever 2002" from Microsoft, as well as "Dead or Alive 3(TM)" from Tecmo, Electronic Arts' "Madden NFL(TM) 2002" and Activision, Inc.'s "Tony Hawk's Pro Skater(TM) 2x."

"Since the launch, Xbox has driven tens of thousands of gamers into our stores," said Dan DeMatteo, president of GameStop Inc. "Each Xbox shipment we receive sells out immediately, but the great news for gamers is that we're getting new Xbox systems multiple times each week."

"We're very pleased with the consumer response to Xbox, having surpassed the 1 million mark at breakneck speed," said Robbie Bach, chief Xbox officer at Microsoft. "This substantiates our belief that gamers would make Xbox one of the hottest gifts for the holidays."

Microsoft plans to ship at least 300,000 additional units into North American retailers through the end of year, putting the system on target with Microsoft's goal of delivering 1 million to 1.5 million units for the calendar year. Xbox is the only system being manufactured in close proximity to U.S. retailers, accelerating the manufacturer-to-retailer cycle.

Just what America needs. 1) More people who will abandon real life to plug themselves into techno-crap. 2) More blurring of the lines between fantasy and reality.

My. Those two trends have worked _so well_ for the world so far... [/saracasm off]]

Great, strap yourself to the plow. Some of us who can distinguish between fantasy and reality happen to like games.

Big damn deal. A hyperexpensive MP3 player - just what the world was demanding.

Floperoo - $139.95 in six months at the closeout sales.

I should have added a little smiley at the end of my post so it was clear that I'm not impressed with the iPod. Let's be clear: It's a joke.

I don't really agree with that, except that some of the games are a little too violent for kids.

Video games got me interested in computers - my grandfather's store had one of the first Pong machines and I had a Atari 2600, which led to getting a computer, which led to taking it up in school.

I still love video games - unfortunately, between my business and the wife and kids, I don't even have time to play a friggen game of Solitare on Windows.

An "I love Microsoft!" BUMP!

I played one of these at Kmart with my girlfriend. She immediately demanded we buy one so she too could "play cartoons". It looks THAT GOOD.

"I'm so sure Apple could have like done it better."

Its kind of sad really, what has happened to some of Microsoft's faithful. It seems that they have adopted
many of the tactics of Apple's coolaid drinking crowd. I guess its an offshoot of the stupid antitrust trial.

For instance framing every computing event as part of the ongoing struggle between good (microsoft/apple/linux)
and bad (microsoft/apple/linux).

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
So I guess as a service to those who wish to continue along this path I'll offer up a few tips:

1. Microsoft is still in the game because of their dominance of the education market.
Yes, apparently a company can maintain computer dominance just as long as there are teachers
somewhere using them. Fancy that.

2. Microsoft has more of a fashionably designed GUI than the Linux alternatives.

2a. and regardless of what their competitors do its just not as good. End of the story. I can't hear you. LA LA LA LA.

3. Microsoft came first. Oh there are ancient myths of other OS's prior to microsoft but we'll hear none of that.

4. All the other companies just copy what Microsoft does. The other companies wait to see what Microsoft
has done before they design new software.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
silly aint it.

There are more but I hope you won't need them.

I plan on buying the Xbox (once its price goes down to post Christmas $$'s) because halo rocks.

I've bought MS Office X.v:mac because Microsoft makes the best set of office tools in the world. Nothing comes close.

I use Mac OS X because its the best OS I've ever used.

This rivalry stuff is getting tired and cyclic.

Apple is doing fine business wise. In fact better than ever. Microsoft, in spite of the trial is doing fine as well.

I'd suggest getting over it. You are becoming that which you once ridiculed.

If it were half the price, and windows-compatible, I'd consider it....

Personally I am holding out for a Holo-Deck, The ultimate sex-drugs-rock&roll experience, imagine what the panty-wadders, nannys and fundies would do with those.

Blind cheerleading for everything Microsoft does might have made some small amount of sense during the Clinton Administration, but these days it just makes you look loopy, not conservative. I mean, a nyah-nyah thread about the Xbox? Who was AGAINST it? If someone prefers the Gamecube or the PS2, are they liberals?
